This complex has many churches and a huge bell tower. The paintings on the walls and the iconostases are superb. The underground part was worth seeing, but is crowded and very popular.

If you're going into the caves, and you're a lady, be prepared with a head covering (a scarf will do) and know that no one is allowed to talk while you're in there. It's definitely an interesting experience.

Spectacular place not only for religious people but for the one who appreciates the greatness of architecture, interested in museums and various kinds of sights, curious about history, culture and not afraid of caves:)
A place where you can sit and think...

As others have said the signage is pretty poor. We did manage to find the caves and miniatures museum using "sign language". It is difficult to find someone who speaks English. We were there in October and it was not crowded at all. It felt like we had the place to ourselves except when we got to the caves. I personally would not do the caves again. It was so claustrophobic - there is only room for one person to walk through but there were people coming from the other direction. It is also very dark and there are graves lining the walking path. My youngest daughter (10) did not enjoy this at all. I was so relieved to get out of there. I imagine in the summer it would be hot as well. It is very big and on a hill so there is a lot of walking involved. I imagine it would be quite difficult if you had a stroller. My children really liked the miniatures museum.

Over the last 2 decades Lavra became a pilgrimage site for Orthodox Christians with many saints' bodies on display on the caves. I was shocked by the crowd level - basically there was almost no gap. The signs were often poorly lit and with people pushing you had little time to read them. Almost no signs, especially explaining who lays there, were in English.

That being said, the place is historically amazing. The above ground churches have been restored and maintained very well. If you get a chance to do a tour with a guide, it is worth it for the stories and the history. Some days the entry to grounds is free due to religious holidays. Caves can always be visited for free, just go to the side entrance (200 meters to the right of main entrance). They will even tell you so at the ticket booth, if you speak Russian.
