The caves or catacombs work until 16.30 - so make sure you reach there at least one hour prior. There are Near Caves and Far Caves, the latter we didnt reach. The catacombs are extremely narrow, extremely hot and poorly lit, plus women and some guys (in shorts) MUST wear headscarves and sort of skirt. Better get the candle at the entrance. There are few churches, however they are not open all the time. They run according to the services held, need to check up beforehand. Ladies, dont wear high heel shoes, there's up & down hillside and stone pathways. Ladies again, when entering into the church with the service running you MUST cover your heads, there are plenty scarves being sold outside. Also they sell quite a lot of honey from all over the Ukraine. Its a little nice market operating on the holy ground. Also plenty of beggars can be spotted inside the Lavra and beyond, they speculate on compassion. Overall you need up to 4-5 hours to see most of the churches and the catacombs. Good Luck!

This is a holy place. Services take place all day. The grounds are beautiful. You can enter a number of the churches. The art is outstanding.

You can buy flowers and offering from the many women along the street.

The caves are amount the best in the Ukraine. You will need two hours to visit them.

You can get a guide in many languages for a very reasonable price. Worth the added expense.

We went to the lower caves after reading in lonely planet it was the top tourist attraction. However, this is an EXTREMELY religious site. In the caves women have to wear a skirt and cover their heads. The monks are very strict about that, and will yell at you if you are not holding the candle correctly or dressed in a skirt. If you do go be prepared to feel that you are intruding and do not belong there, unless of course you are orthodox.

Walking the grounds and visiting the churches and caves is truly an experience. One gets a sense of the Orthodox history of Kiev

Entrance fee just for 3UAH(0,3EUR) and you can just walk around the whole complex. It is quite nice, and you can also buy a tour with a guide. Caves are bit hard to find ( maybe just for us :D ), you just have to go downstairs one building ( where the "caves" sign leads) and there it is...one tunnel with icons and rests of the saints...
