Recently stayed in this hotel for the weekend, read the reviews before i went & had my doubts. Why do travellers expect so much from a hotel, the old building looked impressive, great views overlooking the square, receptions staff spoke english, rooms clean, showers hot & location, location, location. You have limited time on a weekend break so the location means more than feather pillows, get out & explore dont stay in our room. With 32 rugby player to book into the hotel, the reception staff booked all of us in within 30 min, i was more than happy. From the hotel no taxi required enjoy the views of the square, stroll to the bars, restaurants or the night clubs. Bouncers are weary of the british has they think we're all English football hooligans but overall fine.

But when the Euro 2012 start the square & the hotel will be the television because of the location, & just say i stayed there.

Room Tip: Ask for a room over looking the square.

Stayed 2 nights in this hotel fo a business trip.
Definitely the location of the hotel is an asset: you see the Independence Square, you are near the subway station and in vicinity you can find a lot of restaurants at Khreschatik.
The building looks awesome, typical soviet style but inside rooms are renovated, ( exept my bathroom....) so it wasn't so bad. But certainly do not expect western standards, especially cleanliness
The staff was the other "experience" with ladies on each floor collecting the key and making notes . For sure it has nothing to do with international standards. Breakfast was quite simple, and not elaborated but acceptable.
To sum up - an average hotel with not so good staff but in a great location.

First impressions of this hotel are favourable: a sweeping, "marble-look" reception area, plenty of staff on hand, comfortable seating and a bar. It took ages to book in, as if every word of our booking confirmation form was being scrutinised. Our room, on the top floor, had magnificent views over Independence square and Kiev, It had clearly been recently decorated and re-furbished with standard European fittings - basic, but sufficent and very clean. On the first night, the curtains and telephone were missing, but mysteriously appeared the next day! The room lacked air conditioning, but was bearable with the window open (this was early May and temperatures were in the high 20's). However, the noise from the square below meant that one had to choose between a very noisy night or a very hot and uncomfortable one.

We only ate breakfast in the hotel and despite earlier reviews, did not find the food too bad: Ukrainians do not have specific breakfast foods, as we do in western Europe, so much of the breakfast bar was unfamiliar. However, it is worth trying the local food - some of it is excellent, especially the omelettes.

Service seemed to be typical of that in all the establishments we visited in Kiev - efficient, but minimal. Our smiles and social small-talk were never returned. Although this made staff appear rather cold and unfriendly, this may be a cultural norm or perhaps a reflection of the fact that we did not speak Ukrainian and their English was minimal.

On balance, this hotel is fine for a short break (we stayed for 3 nights) - it is about as central as it is possible to be, so ideal for sight-seeing - but I would not wish to stay there for long.

Room Tip: For views, choose a front-facing room: for a quiet nights sleep, choose another.

Well certainly Soviet style hotel, small reception and bar area on ground floor. Rooms were clean and comfortable with a good standard of facilities. Bathrooms were somewhat basic.

Breakfast was boring with general lack of taste and variety but to be honest put this aside and get the benefit from the hotel's location for Kiev it's superb.

Value for money? I did however enjoy it.

This is a basic 3 star hotel with no frills and little focus on customer service ! The location is great and as long as your willing to put miserable faces and a lack of customer care then give it a go. This is not a hotel for families as when the sun goes down the reception fills up with prostitutes .. There seems to be an arrangement with the hotel and strip club which is on site !! Bringing friends into the hotel is a real problem especially any lady friends .... Has more a hostel feel about the place and like they are doing you a favour by staying there .... It's not so cheap so you would expect better ...
