There is no question about one thing. The location of this hotel is fantastic and will give you a completely different experience of the city from just about anywhere else. This is perfect, if like me your stay will be short. Just down the historic St. Andrews hill, between the Rastrelli designed church (under repair at Nov '10) and the excellent Bulgakov museum. Ladies should put away their high heels if they stay here, given the cobbled street that runs downhill, but this is one of its many charms. Other things are more problematic: small rooms, short beds and a most intriguing breakfast selection that includes roast vegetables and savoury rice, depending, I guess, on the mood of the chef. The staff are quite sweet, but the organising principles are a bit slack: heavy looking security, but no one to help if you are struggling with bags, nice little evening tea at 6, but set up in a way that looks awkward to get involved with. Had to take the battery out of the wall clock in my room as it was too noisy, and dealing with the reverse-installed taps in the shower reflects a lack of attention to detail. For a small hotel, this means everything, however if you visit, don't forget to make it to the terraced garden.

Close to St Andrew's church, this hotel suprised me in many ways. Although sceptical upfront, booked from Prague and needing pre-payment to book, staff is very friendly, breakfast great, and the longer I am here - the more I like it.

I am impressed by the restaurant, although looking a bit 'faux', the food quality is good. The salmon in mustard marinade is stunning, as is the herring.

Wifi is wobbely, ask for a network cable - after this you are well connected.

I really like this place!

Hotel has super nice and calm location, but service is really terrible. In the hotel, in the restaurant, everywhere. Looks and feels like you are still in the Soviet Union. And waiters and administration give you a big favour to give the service for what you pay a lot.

The main fascination of the hotel is its location - in the very centre of Kiev, in a quiet Andreevsky Uzviz and a few steps from Bulgakov's house museum - it is rather calm and cozy.

The staff at the reception are polite, friendly and ready to help.

The interior is very elegant and stylish. There were not many guests staying at the hotel at that time, so it was very quiet. The rooms are clear and pleasant enough, we had a room with two windows.

The breakfast is rather good and served in a pleasant restaurant.

So we liked the hotel and recommend it to our friends who go to Kiev.

Hotel Vozdvyzhensky bills itself as a 4-star boutique hotel and while it could be classed as such in some aspects (stylish lobby and restaurant), in others (room size and decorations) it offers no more than would be expected from a solid 3-star hotel.
The staff are pleasant enough for Ukraine and most of them speak at least some English.

It certainly seems that the buffet-style breakfast has improved in comparison to the period other reviewers were at this hotel since I found it better than in most of the hotels I stayed in the UK.

I stayed in a 'Superior Single' room (i.e. it has been refurbished) which was pleasant and comfortable although the bed was curiously short (1.8m long only) and the door to the room is a poor sound insulator meaning that it is all too likely you will be woken up by other guests early in the morning as they leave their rooms (and slam their doors).
Rooms (at least 'Superior' ones) are air-conditioned which proved to be very useful in August in Kiev.

The hotel is located in the old 'Bohemian' quarter of Kiev in a small quiet street (a bonus in Kiev where majority of hotels are on busy roads). Some 30-50m in front of the hotel is Andreevsky Uzviz which is lined with stalls full of various tourist paraphernalia. The center of Kiev is less than 15min walk and there are plenty of restaurants nearby.
One note of caution though - part of what makes the quarter 'Bohemian' are the cobble stoned streets which would be fairly difficult to manage for anyone with any sort of walking difficulties.

Overall, I liked the hotel even though it is overpriced ($250/night) for what it offers. However, given that any hotel in Kiev that has been refurbished charges extortionate prices, you could do worse than Vozdvyzhensky

This was a basic hotel in a quiet area, but definitely not the boutique that it looked on the Web site or in reviews I'd read elsewhere. I, too, would skip the breakfast. Instead, there was a great street with a large grocery and quaint coffee shops (located right by the hotel impressa). I also had a problem because I confirmed with my American Express via e-mail, but they claimed they had a problem with the machine and couldn't accept payment except by Visa or cash. this was a problem because I was traveling for work, only had my corporate AmEx and cash card, and it was a strain to pay in cash.
