“Get it before it's gone*”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

A great afternoon out - starting at 1700 and finishing 3 hours later at 20.00. My toddler was a bit too restless and dare I say a bit too young at 2 years old to truly enjoy it - but Mum and Dad did. At 100 Hrvnia a ticket it does not break the bank and was great value. You should visit it before someone in a suit pretending to be European bans it.

Caveat:
*OK.. so I love animals and have been brought up by the Western view that keeping animals in cages and making them perform is cruel... but to be fair to this Circus in particular the animals all look very healthy - and dare I say it happy (yeah - but what would I know). Plus - the event is a lot larger and about performances from acrobats, clowns and performers many of which are top class. For those circus-haters perhaps they should also take note of the beggars on the streets of Kyiv and address the issue of orphanages before they take umbrage at a parrot being forced to fly around the ring (athough I too, winced at the bear wearing a tutu).
Soon, the circus in this form.. like unguarded ladders, dangerous playgrounds with hard surfaces and the thought of letting your children play up a tree will be gone forever...

It was amazing event in Kiev. Surely I will tell my friend about National Circus of Ukraine to my friends. Everypne should be there. Highly recommended. The tickets are not expensive, the actors are brilliant!

“A definite one-time "must see" attraction”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

Address: 2 Peremohi (Victory) square, Kyiv Ukraine; satellite map at http://wikimapia.org/2335/National-Circus-of-Ukraine

Site: http://www.circus.kiev.ua

Conclusion: a definite one-time "must see" attraction

Pros: old-school type circus, time-machine feelings

Cons: cold, drafty in winters, little kid-friendly (sharp marble edges, steep steps, etc.), lot of posing/dancing in between performances that may bore children.

Info:
- The modern building of the National Circus of Ukraine with 2100 seats; opened in 1960.
- In 1998, the Kiev circus received the status of the National Circus of Ukraine.
- It's a largest domed building in Kyiv. Still has much of a Soviet flavor.

Shows:
- Lots of "ballet style" dancing, "colorful light" shows and posing in between performances are very Soviet or early-90s like, it makes shows difficult for kids to sit through.
- Animal shows still exist (tigers, lions, dogs), may not be everybody’s liking…

Intermissions:
- Snacks, sodas, cotton candy, and toys are sold during intermissions. A couple of dilapidated cafeteria on the site provide with mediocre-quality tea and coffee.
- Photo opportunity with live animals, soap bubble shows.

Children: Not very children friendly: steep sharp-edged marble steps that lead to you seats; entrance hall is drafty in cold seasons.

“Didn't see this in any travel book - but LOVED it! Not to be missed”
Reviewed July 5, 2012

While visiting Kiev, our friends took us to the circus. The acts change often and it was really well done. The acts are varied and all of us had a great time. The Ukraine outfits are noteworthy and the acts even included a boxing kangaroo that our kids loved.
