I did not stay at the Hotel but ate at the second floor restaurant with friends. I preferred the German over the French menu. I ate two large portions of wiener schnitzel with mashed potatoes. Schnitzel was excellent. I chose two appetizers: chicken soup with meatballs (admitted more a Ukrainian than a German specialty) and the Marseille's fish soup (more like the Russian fish soup uxa). Both were good but portion size a bit small with the chicken soup whereas if the fish soup was supposed to be bouillabaisse, then it fell slightly off the mark (though overall I cannot really complain). Washed all down with a liter and a half of beer.
I found the wait-staff to be excellent and special thanks to the barman Denis, who was especially attentive and responsive. I was accorded superior and speedy service.
However, this venue closes at 11pm. Therefore, you need to pay and be out by 11pm.
I took the metro from downtown (Teatral'na on Pushkin Street) to Shulyavska. The hotel is not far from the metro but it is very important to turn left when you exit the metro and head straight though the rows of kiosks and turn right down a staircase proceeding straight to the other side of Prospect Peremogi; you are then on Hetmana street and just 300-400 meters away from the hotel. If you go left. you reach Nestorova street (then you know you went the wrong way). Unfortunately, except for Nestorova, there are no (visible) street signs (until you reach Hetmana, 6, where you can pass the cinema Butterfly and go up more stairs and turn left into the restaurant without any need to go through the hotel itself). The neighborhood looks a bit run down but it is safe enough even at night.
I found the venue to be good value for money but I steered clear of wine and cocktails sticking strictly to beer of tap -- in any event the most appropriate libation to wash down German foodl Perhaps to keep costs down, however, no German beers are on offer.
I would recommend this venue to Ukrainians, expatriates and tourists alike for an enjoyable night out. I am usually reluctant even to consider eating out in a restaurant in a hotel in Kiev out of fear of being gouged and badly ripped off. With respect to Brasserie in Cosmopolite hotel, however, my concerns were completely unfounded and I unreservedly accord the restaurant a hearty endorsement.
