for st petersburg hotel ....location and price (around 65 dollars per night)is the best of this place, close walking distance to main street , restaurants and shopping...(.metro system...but stay away from that transportation method...cheap but too crowd and not english signs at all)...in the underground shopping mall...hotel .has an atm at location...(they dont take american dollars) but u can use ur visa card there....nice places to walk around and have good diining places..even a small market just acroos the street...

another place really intereting to visit is the Mother land monument and museum.....a lot of history , military museum, airplanes from www2 , tanks ,missiles and photos of the last 100 years of Ukranian history...

Great old world style hotel, very conviently located in city center. Good rates. Best to have native speaker make your reservation.

Room Tip: Suite was good value, Very roomy with high ceilings.

I stayed in the St Petersburg during a short break to Kiev. The location is very central, at the bottom of Taras Shevchenko BoulevardI, near the covered market. I was given an un-refurbished (old style) double room with a balcony for 365 UAH per night. There was a shared shower and toilet which were modern and cleaned throughout the day.

The staff started speaking English (very well) after my terrible attempts at Russian and were friendly and helpful.

It was clean and relatively comfortable. The decor was quite interesting: extremely high ceiling with two full height windows, parquet floor with two or three red oriental style rugs, quite old peach and white textured wallpaper and various pieces of 1930s style furniture (including a large 3 panel hinged mirror).

It was equipped with a washbasin (complementary soap provided), TV, rotary dial phone, full-size fridge and some kind of odd soviet style radio which was fixed to the wall and factory tuned to just one channel (it was still working).

There were a couple of annoyances. There was a glass transom (see photos), without blinds or curtains, above my door which overlooked the constantly lit corridor; quite ironic given that there seems to be a propensity in Ukraine to put curtains in unnecessary places (short distance trains, marshrootkas etc). My room seemed to be the only one with this problem though; all the other transoms had their glass replaced with wood. The soviet era fridge, while spotlessly clean and working fine, was loud (think tyre inflater). These can be forgiven though, given the price location and staff.
