“Been there once, and it's enough”
Reviewed October 17, 2012

We had nothing to do that afternoon and walked just past the Belgrade Zoo. My boyfriend suggested to have a look, why not? I love animals, so we bought tickets and walked in.

The zoo is not big, a lot of things are quite old & not well maintained. Heaps of animals were kept in very small space within cages and walls. They didn't look happy. I know in general animals are all not happy staying in zoos rather than natural environment, however, zoo management should provide as good condition as possible for animals.

Having said that, Belgrade/Serbia is still behind surrounding countries in terms of economy and social systems, when people still struggle achieving better living standard, how can we help the animals?

“Good,but...”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

I love animals very much, and do not like to see them in the cages, but in every ZOO animals are the prisoners.Still,I love to see them.
Belgrade ZOO is not great comparing to some greatest European ZOOs,but, with its 250 species,it is one of the best in the region. We spent a nice day there, fee is very acceptable, there are some beautiful and pretty rare animals, but I do not like conditions in which most of that animals live.
It is really concrete and cages for the most of animals. That is sad,and I hope they will do something about that.

“Wonderful location, large range of animals and low price - but utterly depressing conditions”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

Built into the fortress (with some enclosures being in the moat sections) making it easy to reach and giving a nice overall structure. Entry is cheap (~400 DN) and a wide range of animals including bears, lions, elephant and tigers at the more exotic end of the range. But that is where the positive points end.

Most of the enclosures are very outdated; animals are bunched together in a space insufficient for one of them which is typically only a concrete paved area surrounded by bars with no objects to interact with or stimulate them. Most of the animals were either sat looking depressed, trying to open the cage door, or restlessly pacing back and forth in circles with looks of sheer boredom or frustration on their faces.

This seemed to be improving with some new glass surrounded enclosures containing landscaped environments with objects to hide behind and interact with. But this was only a small minority and to do this for every animal will be impossible without dropping many from the zoo.

“Heart Wrenching. Concrete and bars”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

I have been visiting Belgrade for over 15 years and have seen many changes and improvements but SADLY improvements to the zoo have not been one of them. I would rather see less animals and the ones they do have kept in larger enclosures with more then just concrete beneath them. It is very sad to look at these beautiful animals kept in pathetic ways that are totally unnatural to them. Anybody who thinks this zoo is acceptable must not like animals or have ever visited a good zoo. Belgrade is WONDERFUL city but it it makes me so sad that this zoo can continue to go on for years with very little improvements for the wonderful, exotic animals exhibited there.
