“A locals diner”
Review of Polet Restaurant

Polet Restaurant
Ranked #172 of 1,280 Restaurants in Belgrade
Cuisines: Seafood
Description: Polet restaurant, a place with long tradition, opens its doors to you. Restaurant is completely renovated, but it has kept the spirit of the old tavern life. It is located in one of the most beautiful parts of Belgrade, on „Flower Square“, across from the „Jugoslovensko dramsko“ theater. During the winter you can enjoy warm and pleasant atmosphere suitable for socializing with friends, and try famous traditional local or Mediterranean cuisine. During the summer our garden is ideal place for you. If you find it important to eat well and not just to „be seen“ then you should come to Polet restaurant!

At a central location offers extremely low prices..1,1 euro for a big fish sandwich. Packed with locals, try the fish in an old fashioned but fascinating enviroment. good choice for lunch too.

I like Polet because it exists many years and it survived so many changes of Belgrade. It is in the hart of the city, near Beogradjanka, Slavija and City Railstation. I work nearby so pop in sometimes to have a snack or a beer with my colleagues. It is fish restaurant which is quite rare in Serbia because Serbians like meat! You can have your fish served or to go which is very practical in lack of time. Interior is a bit old fashioned but clean; waiters are middle aged men and women (not fancy nor modern) but ok. The food is good, maybe to greasy for my taste but service is quick and correct. It isn't expensive. To summarize: if you need cheap fish restaurant in the center of the city, brief service, tasty meals and if you don't pay attention on socialistic atmosphere, you'll be satisfied.

The location is perfect, near the buildings "Beogradjanka" and "Student cultural center".
This is my favourite: Grilled mackerel (in serbian "skuša na žaru") with "šopska" salad (tomato, cucumber, onion and white/feta-like cheese) and garlic sauce. The mackerel in this restaurant is served with spinach, boiled potatoes and a piece of lemon. Grilled mackerel is the cheapest dish if I remember correctly, around 250 serbian dinars (RSD). You could also try the fish soup, I heard it's great. Drink? Always "knjaz miloš" sparkling water (or any red wine).
And as always, never try non-fish-related food in a fish restaurant (burgers etc.).
Back in the old days, this particular fish restaurant was famous because the waiters used to dress up in navy soldier costumes, but not nowadays.
