“The old traditional serb restaurant”
Reviewed June 2, 2014

If You turn from the Republic Square with the monument to the Duke Michailo(sitting on the horse) in the center of it, across the building of the People Theatre, You can easily get to this restaurant in the Skadarlia, going down by the Francuska (French) Street, that descends downward beside the building of the People Theatre. The street Skadarska with all these old serbs fashioned restaurants, is also sloped and leads to the Tzar Dusan street with tram lines.
The Skadarska Street is characteristic by its pavement, made of the cobblestones, that date way back from the nineteenth century, when the Ottoman Empire was still present here on the Balcan Peninsula.
The Three Hats is 150 years old restaurant and before it established itself as the place for leisure with the good food and drink and simply to meet someone of the friends and spend the time with him, it was the workshop and the board with the three hats. That gave the inspiration to the owner
for the name for the restaurant.
The cuisine here, is genuine serb, the national. What You must taste, is for sure the famous barbecue (the "cevapcici", the "raznici" that are stack on the wooden sticks ( resemble very with the famous "shashlik" from the Republic of Georgia or Republic of Armenia). Then You may order also the spicy " veshalica" and very hot "muckalica".
We mustn't forget the vegetarians, who also will get the good lunch under the roof of this rustic restaurant or "kafana" in serb language. That will be the fish and vegetable meals.
But the basic demand is however for the barbecue. That is a true feast for the palate. At the end comes the very good drink, the very renown here in Serbia and getting more and more the repute beyond the Serbia, the very popular " rakija".
So I can recommend You, above all, the kebab ( five larger in portion), then chicken livers in bacon and finally as the sweet ending, the dry pie with the nuts. That is a hallmark of this restaurant desserts.
Not forget for the tambourine music, that You can hear every day in the Three Sheshira (Hats).

Was demolished tavern Dardanelles, which was a meeting place for bohemian Belgrade, Belgrade nightlife then moves to the bohemian quarter, particularly in the three hats.

“Good for larger groups”
Reviewed May 27, 2014

A large, traditional restaurant. Very touristy. I think it could offer an attraction or two to a Western tourist; everyone in our group was Bulgarian, so our experience there wasn't much different than what we'd get in an average touristy restaurant in Sofia. Food was quite good though, and plenty. I really have no complaints at all. It just felt like there wasn't that much "attention to detail", but when you have such a large restaurant that can accomodate big groups of people, that's inevitable. I thought it was great for a large group such as ours (we were about 20 people) and clearly it is intended for such group as pretty much the entire place was full of them.
