I had come to their former hostel in 2007 when the owner helped me to organise accommodation for a big group of fellow students and I didn't miss the opportunity to stay here again. It's safe, clean, well located for the sights and the staff are helpful, but what makes this hostel special is that the owners treat you as their friends - they'll share their rakija, stories, music and time with you. As they create a great atmosphere in the common areas, even solo travellers don't feel awkward hanging out there and it's a great place to chill or meet some people to go and party with. These days I could have afforded a night in a faceless chain hotel but why watch TV alone in your room nibbling room service food when you can hang out with Belgraders in Belgrade?

I have just returned from a great stay at Star Hostel, and am quite shocked to read some of the negative reviews on here about it. Granted, the place does not have the most modern sparkling facilities, but if you are expecting that then you should probably up your budget and stay in a 4* hotel instead...

The facilities here are more than adequate and the dorms pretty clean and spacious, especially compared to some hostels, there is a decent kitchen with an actual oven (rather than a hot plate) and the common room is cosy and welcoming. The security is good, and everyone has a decent sized locker. The location is perfect for exploring the city - everything downtown is within walking distance and if you want to go further/are lazy public transport is easily accessible.

As an added bonus, and the thing that makes this better than a lot of other hostels, the staff here are super friendly experts on Belgrade who actually care if you enjoy your time in the city or not. They will give you a whole host of recommendations of things to do, places to eat and drink etc etc.

Thanks for a great stay guys, I'll be back for sure!

We stayed at Star in Belgrade for a night (or two) back in July while doing a tour of the Balkans and SE Europe. It was an average hostel. We had some trouble checking in because when we showed up at about 8am the door was locked and nobody from the staff came to let us in until a guest came to the door. We later found out the night guy was sick and didn't hear the buzzer. There was 4 of us and we got a very nice 5 bbed room to ourselves. The furniture was new and in good condition. The bathrooms were kind of like normal Balkan household bathrooms instead of something built for a hostel with multiple travellers. They were a little grungy but sufficient and fair to the price. A washer was also available. The overall security of the hostel was very good. You needed a key to get inside the buildiong and another to get inside your room. Lockers were also available free of charge.
The two owners were fantastic and very helpful in aiding us plan our trip in Belgrade and beyond. They spoke excellent English and suggested we use an awesome mini-bus transfer service to Sarajevo (highly recommended). The hostel is well located although a little far from the bus and train stations- not that far since we did the walk with all our backpacks.
My only complaint is that we were told to pay the full cost of our booking including the 10% pre-paid booking fee via Hostelbookers.com The owner told us that that 10% goes to Hostelbookers.com and he sees none of it, so we basically paid 110% for our room. This was the only hostel that this happened in during our 3 week trip. Not a huge deal since it was cheap anyways.
Overall a good hostel. Nothing outstanding but very good value and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to people.

Very friendly hostel, very helpful staff and fun atmosphere. Very centrally located.Only drawback was the lack of hygiene and cleaning..particularly the bathrooms which need a complete overhaul and detracted from an otherwise pleasant experience.

Okay, so the staff is really friendly and it's in a good neighborhood. It's a small hostel with a great location. But, the bathrooms look like they don't get cleaned regularly (there are only 2 bathrooms in a 20 person hostel). The I think the worst part were the beds and sheets. Park benches are more comfortable than these beds. Also the sheets are way too small. This place has potential to be really good, if only they cleaned regularly and got better mattresses.

Room Tip: bring your own sheets
