Mercure Belgrade Excelsior
Ranked #23 of 86 Hotels in Belgrade
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 4, 2012

Having checked out this site I decided on The Excelsior and was very happy. Yes, it has been renovated and looks great. The rooms are of a good size and tastefully decorated and clean (I stayed in a double as it was 5 euro more than the single rooms which are small). The staff were friendly and helpful and unobtrusive. Breakfast was a great European affair of different breads, cured meats and cheese, eggs and hot Serbian dishes. The coffee was excellent.
The location of the hotel is great, while not in the centre it is just a stone throw away from the pedestrian shopping area and has two parks, one in front and one round the corner that joggers can use.
All in all I had a great time there and would probably stay there again on another visit.

This hotel was recommended to my partner and I who were travelling on business for 1 week. Three stars belies four star accommodation. The hotel is an historic building which has recently been refurbished and very tastefully. On arrival the staff were excellent and attentive and there were no delays in booking in. I have read complaints of negotiating a few stairs to the small lift but in all honesty such criticism is not worthy of print. The purpose of a hotel is to have sanctuary and refuge and you sleep in the rooms no in the small lift (of an historic building that was not built with 4 modern day lift shafts). I was allocated a very pleasant double room to the side of the hotel. It was clean. modern and had a comfortable bed, soft linen and pillows. Modern air conditioning was available but not required. The bathroom was more than adequate with a "wet room"type shower and very pleasant shower gel in a dispenser on the wall. No more small bottles! The mini bar was well stocked at ridiculously cheap prices (compared to the UK) and there were plenty of snacks in the form of chocolate and crisps.
The hotel is situated close to the Parliament building and only a 5 minute walk from the centre of town. Taxis are very cheap. As a guide a beer or large glass of wine in the hotel bar was no more than about £1.50. The hotel is perfectly situated for the tourist or business traveller.
All in all it has been an excellent experience so far and as a business traveller who spent 260 days in hotels last year I have no hesitation in recommending the hotel (although I did only experience a double room).
I want to thank the Marija on the front desk who was very helpful in recommending a local restaurant and then booking it for me. She also knew my name without any reference to hotel records having remembered me from 2 nights previously. Very impressive and excellent an personal touch
On the downside, the breakfast was adequate but no hot food or fresh fruit is served and I feel that this si the only area where the hotel needs to improves its service. That being said, there were still many options on offer.
All in all I would wholly recommend this hotel for the location, service and comfort.

Room Tip: Ask fo the side of the hotel, not a room overlooking the park (and busy highroad)

We stayed here twice as a family while transiting through Belgrade, in summer 2012.

Staff were quite friendly and breakfast was good.

Access to rooms is not fully step free (you have to walk a few steps to reach the lift which is very small).

Rooms are pretty basic but very clean. Wifi worked fine and there was free fruit in the room.

The location is very good, next to the parliament.

Overall, there is not much to complain about but there is not anything to be raving about either. This is a solid hotel which is to be recommended if you are looking for basic amenities.

Stayed here for two weeks on business. My initial room was too noisy (1st floor overlooking main road) - staff responded positively to my request for another room. I ate in the restaurant several nights as there was good choice and reasonable price. Limited choice for breakfast and not a lot of interest from waiters.
However the reception staff get a gold star for attentiveness and helpfulness. They pointed out places to go, how to use the buses/trams etc. I will stay here again (better than the Prag where I stayed last visit)

Central location and close to everything. Contemporary and smart decor. Very good breakfast. I had a single room which was the smallest hotel room I have ever stayed in. Nevertheless, it has everything you need. Good value. I would stay there again.

Hotel has very good location with modern look and feel. Stuff was friendly and very helpful. Breakfast was very good. Only complain was that the bed was not the most comfortable. We enjoyed our stay very much and we will certainly come back.

This hotel came recommended. First impression from the reception staff were friendly and my room booking was dealt with promptly. I stayed on 2 separate occasions during a 10 day tour of the country and could not fault either room, everything was well coordinated clean and comfortable the shower room was excellent. From other reviews on the breakfast, it wasn't my usual breakfast but I see that as part of the experience when visiting another country I certainly did not go hungry. The location could not be better for exploring the shopping areas or the places of interest I would have no problems in recommending to friends and would certainly stay again.
