Not much to see, and the museum is very religious oriented.
Great stuff inside, I must admit, but not really an "art" museum with the usual use of the term. It has a very good price so pay a visit there and you might like it!

“Take an hour or two to visit this interesting National Art Museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2012

had the opportunity to spend a few hours at this museum and discovered some interesting art by Romanian Artists. The more traditional art (mostly Christian religious art) is historical and did not catch my attention as much as the contemporary art (through the last century). I was surprised at the contributions made by Romanian artists. Well worth the time.

“The best museum in Romania”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2012

Due to the importance of its patrimony, the extensive repair work and the modern infrastructure this is the best museum in Romania. Do not be driven away by the somptuousness. The staff is friendly, and they will guide you. There is a wonderful collection of Romanian and European art, including Brancusi, plus amazing temporary exhibitions. Take at least one day for the entire museum, or half a day for one of the galleries [Romanian and European, separate entrances] to admire in peace. The catalogues and postcards are some of the best you can find in Bucharest.

“Art gallery”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2012

The former palace of our last king Michel, host work of art. It takes time to vistit all galleries, but if there is some time, it would be nice to visit - mainly for art lovers.

“Fantastic art gallery”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2012

My husband and I spent five hours in this art gallery on our recent stay in Romania and we could have easily spent much longer. The works are beautifully displayed and the building itself is just as lovely to look at as the art works themselves. I have never walked up and down such an impressive staircase before in my life, I don't think! The first gallery (Medieval and Early Romanian art) gave a fascinating glimpse into the world of the Romanian orthodox church. I particularly liked the censers in the shape of churches! The intricately carved wooden iconostases were also very impressive. Moving further into the gallery, we were delighted to be given the opportunity to see more modern Romanian art; the artists were certainly 'off our radar' but the works very definitely merited a long perusal. It was well-worth paying the extra fee to see the western European art gallery too. All the 'big names' were present and we were surprised and pleased to see such a wonderful selection of paintings.

It was tragic that this gallery was so badly damaged in the Revolution, but wonderful that it has been so beautifully restored. It is a gallery that certainly deserves to be better known.

One final tip: if you can, walk past the gallery building in the late afternoon just before the sun sets, for a very atmospheric view of the outside bronzes and their shadows cast upon the walls of the gallery building.
