At the end of a Danube cruise we bid farewell to our group at a large chain hotel and took a taxi to the charming and friendly Rembrandt. After a warm welcome from Marius we took the diminutive lift up to room 51, which had a lovely view over the rooftops, copper domes and all. It was spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean and had a bath as well as a shower. There was complimentary mineral water and a safe in the cupboard, as well as a snack basket with items for purchase. We had read reviews that front rooms are noisy, but being high up, we didn't experience this and slept like logs.
Location on Smardan Street in the heart of the old town couldn't have been better, with the National History Museum, St Nicolas Church (built as a private chapel for Romania's first royal couple), the Stavropoleos Monastery and a host of restaurants (including the atmospheric Caru cu Bere and excellent van Gogh Cafe), cafes and shops on your doorstep. I believe that the old town has experienced a real revival in the last 3 - 4 years. The hotel is also an easy walk (15 minutes) from the Piata Unirii and the river (view of the Parliament Palace) as well as from Piata Revolutiei with the National Art Museum and the Athenaeum (well worth a visit to see the impressive frescoes in the auditoreum - only 10 lei).
Breakfast up a spiral staircase from the lobby was good with boiled eggs, cold meats, cheese, yoghurt, fruit, fresh fruit juice, a good selection of bread, tasty waffles and excellent bottomless coffee.
Best of all was the friendly and efficient service throughout. Marius was outstanding on our departure day when we ran late because we had omitted to change the time on our watches. He had coffee and croissants to go ready for us in the lobby and helped us rush to the corner with our luggage to the waiting transport he had organised the day before.
I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone who is a fan of small hotels with a personal touch.

Dear Mrs. Sue,

I think this is the 1st review we're received from South Africa.
It's been a great pleasure reading it and I hope your lines will also encourage other tourists from the African continent to come discover Europe.

See you next time.

This is the only room with a balcony & it is on the top (7th floor) with a wooden deck & a gorgeous view of the rooftops! The other rooms are average & this one is only a few euros more expensive. The location & staff are great! :)

I had the opportunity to stay at this hotel at the end of June when i came to Bucharest for a medical conference.
Altough I stayed here for only 2 nights i have to admit this little hotel was a nice surprise for me. They serve good and fresh breakfast, Cristina- the waitress very polite, she even made me waffles on the spot.
Rooms were very clean and housekeeping has good eyes for details. The reception team complete perfectly the atmosphere of this hotel.
The hotel is located quite in the heart of Old Town, the perfect place to be, as my friends told me before arrival and also experienced myself: beautiful and cozy terraces, international and Romanian restaurants and pubs. We have spent our last night out here and we were very happy about this new face of Bucharest.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to everybody I know.

Thank you Rembrandt!

Room Tip: I recommend room 41. Very nice business class room with view over Old Town.

We read such wonderful things about this place, but after staying in superb and far less expensive hotels in Sibiu, Brasov, and Sighisoara, this has been such a let-down. We booked for two, there were towels for one. The room is primitive compared to rooms we're stayed in elsewhere all over Romania.

The staff have been quite sweet and helpful, but they do not alone constitute a decent hotel. The management needs to really work on this place. The location is great if you don't mind really noisy and smoke filled cafes just outside the hotel until the wee hours. I would never recommened this hotel.

Dear guest,

First of all we like to thank you for your open opinion. We also would like to explain why we believe your comments are not fair to our hotel or to Bucharest.

You mentioned that your room didn’t impress you. You stayed in a room of 25 m2 with airconditioning, a natural oak floor, a leather armchair, an over-sized wooden desk, a TV- and DVD-player, cable tv with foreign language channels, an original Tiffany lamp and on the wall original photography by local artists. We can't understand what you consider to be primitive about it without further details on your part.

You compare room rates between the capital and the countryside. We are sure one can find cheaper accommodation in Sibiu, Brasov or Sighisoara. You might understand though that the rent of an historical building in the very center of a capital city is also way higher than in the countryside. It’s like comparing apples with peaches.

Regarding the towels issue, our rooms are set-up for 1 person. Since you were a walk-in guest with no advance booking, you found the standard preparation of the room. Our colleague from the reception brought the second set of towels in a matter of minutes once you decided to stay.

There are 2 cafes next to the hotel that both close at midnight. These are not noisy clubs or busy restaurants, but quiet cafes. We fail to see the relation between smoke in those cafes and the spacious rooms in our non smoking hotel.

In the end, we understand your urge for us to work on the place but you've given us no clue on exactly what made your stay so unpleasant.

As for Bucharest being a dump, without any mention of why there's not really much we can say about that.

Best regards,
Rembrandt Hotel Team

Rembrandt Hotel is a very nice and cosy hotel The location is perfect if you want to stay right in the old part of the city and close to nice restaurants and cafees in the interesting and beautiful Bucharest. We stayed three nights in beautiful rooms, and not only the hotel was great but also the staff. They were very friendly and helpful from picking us up in the airport till bringing us back again. Big thanks, especially to Marius, who was very helpful and also knew the answers of whatever we asked him about his country, but also to the smiling girls at the desk and serving coffee in the cute little cafe for breakfast called Klein. We got Dutch cheese and lovely fresh fruit for breakfast, and in the evening we had a drink in the cafe next door called Van Gogh. Room 22 was a standard room but very clean, had a good size and a big bathroom and windows to the back of the building. We will for sure be back again and hopefully soon.
