“Friendliest place in Bucharest!”
Reviewed February 3, 2014 via mobile

I arrived at the Midland hostel after having an unpleasant experience on the bus ride there. (I got fined for inadvertently not validating my ticket) After Eli showed me to my room I felt like it was my home away from home. He also helped me book my bus tickets to Istanbul from there. It was just the hospitality I needed to start my trip on the right foot again. I would highly recommend this place. It can't be beat especially for the price. It is also in a really safe area as it's right across the street from the French Embassy. In fact, the guard walked over and pointed me in the right direction when he saw me walking around confused.

I stayed here for 2 nights during a group trip to Bucharest.
The staff was very friendly and the hostel was very clean.

Pros
- The manager Eli and his staff were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area
- Clean rooms and bedding/sheets
- Great central location
- Nice and warm on a cold winter's weekend

Cons
- Hard to say, maybe some shower gel in the showers and an extra sink in the bathroom

The manager/owner, being from Tennesse, is a great source of information on Romania. When landed at the airport I paid for bus fare to get to the Midlands. Five weeks later, Eli correctly said that the airport probably originally loaded enough fare to make a trip back to get my flight. He even supplied the schedule to get on the 2:40 A.M. bus for an early morning flight.

Most hospitable of all, he let me hang around the hostel after my noon checkout at no charge. I even cooked dinner and took a shower before departing. The skies finally cleared, after three days of pouring rain, to make it to the airport without soaking my backpack.

Room Tip: There's only one sink in the bathroom.

The hostel's directions on their www is a bit fuzzy getting off the 783 bus from the airport. It should be more specific like walk 50 steps towards the McDonalds when bus stops; turn right on the very first small street from the main boulevard. The rest is spot on about passing the Tonka Bar and being across from the French Embassy though.

Bath is very small with no where to change besides inside three wet individual shower stalls. Just one sink for everybody and two co-ed toilets. Somebody was charging their IPod for the two days I was there. That either means it's a very safe place for your valuables and/or management isn't very observant. Great to have a full size real kitchen with small sink; four burner stove; and large ice box which is cleaned out daily. A small non stop market is around the corner to get beers for the typical party German crowds. WIFI is strong but sofa cushions sink.

Midland is two metro stops (University and Union) to Old Town. It's a couple in the other direction to Gard de Nord train station also. Lots of stray dogs in that area though at night when I walked it.

This hostel is a nice place to stay in Bucharest for a very reasonable price.
It is clean, comfortable and well located. It has all the facilities you might need: wifi, computers, free maps, lockers, a bathroom, a proper kitchen. There is a small balcony and a common room. It is right opposite the French Embassy and since we are French and were there around Bastille Day (14th July), we went to the fancy party that was organized there, it was really cool!
