“Home away from Home”

During these very competitive times in the hotel business, once in a while we come across a property worthy of accolades. From the time of the electronic reservation, to the pre- arrival, arranging transport to and from the hotel/ communication, the most friendly and accommodating staff, this hotel is worth mentioning. The room was sufficiently and large and clean, bedding felt and looked fresh and new. This hotel is definitely a work in progress. Upon our departure we learned that they were getting ready to open a bar. Too bad, would love to have "hung out" at their bar. The staff went well out of their way to make us feel as though we were guests in their own home. They secured car rental arrangements, AND contacted us while traveling through the country to let us know that a specific room type became available for our last night so that we could return to Zagreb. Irma, Maja, and another gentleman whose name I regretfully forgot (so sorry), thank you for making our stay so wonderful!

Jaegerhorn is situated just a few steps away from Zagreb’s main square, Trg Bana Josipa Jelacica, on Ilica Street (mind the trams!). The hotel’s name in emblazoned above an archway on the street front through which the hotel entrance and reception can be found along with a number of small shops on either side.

The reception greeted us warmly upon arrival. Our room was compact, clean and comfortable overlooking the terrace area at the rear of the hotel. A breakfast buffet is served each morning as part of the room rate.

The hotel’s greatest feature however is its unrivalled location in the heart of Zagreb – virtually everything is with walking distance. As previous reviews have alluded to the steps at the rear of the hotel terrace, through a small wooded area, lead you to the upper old town of Zagreb {Gornji Grad}, offering great views and access to the colourfully tiled roof of St. Mark’s, the Stone Gate etc. A funicular in an adjacent street is an alternative option for the old, infirm or lazy individual. From the candlelit Stone Gate one can walk downhill and cut across into Tkalciceva Street which is like entering a hidden pedestrianised village full of cafes and bars.

We found Zagreb to be a very compact, safe and friendly city; one day whilst walking looking for a restaurant a local lady stopped and gave us a number of recommendations.
We ended up in two of them – Ristorante Carpaccio and Boban. Another thing a tourist will immediately spot is the large amount of cafes in the city. The areas immediately surrounding Ilica St. (opposite hotel) are full of outdoor café where it’s advisable to sit awhile and watch the world go by as the locals do.

On check-out from Jaegerhorn the hotel staff advised us to take a taxi to the airport as taking a tram to the bus station to get the airport shuttle would cost as much but take a lot longer. The taxi firm, Ekotaxi, charged us 92.30kuna (13euro approx) for the journey for 2 people with 2 bags. One of the travel guides suggested the price would be far greater at 250kn!.

Unfortunately we only spent two days in the capital city of Croatia but we would have appreciated another one. I guess we will have to go back again and revisit Zagreb and make Jaegerhorn our base once again.

One thing to watch is that the hotel's name is spelt Jagerhorn NOT Jaegerhorn. The hotel is in a great location in the best part of Zagreb. The rooms are at the back of a long courtyard and are very quiet. They are well appointed and very clean (the hotel was refurbished in 2011). A buffet breakfast with a wide selection of items is included in the reasonable tariff. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Zagreb is beautiful and so is this hotel. It is clean, right near the centre of town on Ilica, the staff are friendly and helpful, the bathroom works well and the breakfast is great (scrambled eggs +). Hard to see how you could do better for the price. Stay there, and ladies go the jewelery shops across from the reception: you wont be disappointed.

The Hotel Jaegerhorn has an excellent location in Zagreb. The staff is friendly and helpful. We received advice on using the trams and a city map when checking in. The rooms were quite nice and the breakfast was excellent. Would recommend to anyone staying in Zagreb.

Well after arriving by train into that god awful station in Zagreb, it was a lovely surprise when we entered Jagerhorn. Clean room with air conditioning (a rarity in a lot of European accommodation). We certainly appreciated it as there has been a heat wave on our travels through Europe. Staff were kind, polite, helpful and couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast was served in a beautiful courtyard, and there was so much to choose from and more offered. Very close to everything like shops, restaurants and sights. Perfect location.
