“Unexpectedly good”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2012

As Zagreb is not that big, we decided to visit the Zoo by tram. We were amazed that is was so well kept. On Mondays, you can get a reduction on the entrance fee. Enjoy the peace and quiet and of course a drink in the middle of the zoo.

“Well cared for ZOO in a convenient location and beautiful surroundings”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2012

I first visited Zagreb ZOO more than 20 years ago. Although it had more big "star" animals back then, such as polar bears, elephants etc, it is much more animal-friendly now. I like going to zoos generally, so I can confirm that the Maksimir ZOO takes care of the animals, trying to make their habitats look as natural as possible and to be really spacious.
It is situated in a big Maksimir park, near the centre of the city, you can reach it by trams no 4, 5, 7, 11 and 12, the stop is right across the road from the ZOO, at Dinamo Football stadium. After a five minute walk through the park, you reach the ZOO. The tickets are really a bargain compared to European ZOO prices.
There are lots of educational boards in the ZOO, most of them in Croatian only, but many of them are easy to understand only by watching pictures or the exhibits themselves. Most of the exhibits are very imaginative, such as pieces of thick rope tied to a log, representing the maximal length of several types of snakes found in Croatia, or a replica of a termite mound in cross-section, etc. All is very child-friendly and aimed at understanding the biodiversity and the importance of conserving the nature.
The ZOO is home to many interesting species, such as meerkats, red pandas (absolutely gorgeous), tapirs, snow leopards, pygmy hyppos, tigers, lions, jaguars, cheetas, wolves, otters, seals and sea lions, lynx, pelicans, cangaroos etc. There is a public feeding schedule and the keepers make real shows on that occasion, especially with sea lions.
There are several specialised exhibitions/habitats, such as the dark one for nocturnal animals, so the visitors can observe them while active, tropical house with the humid atmosphere, "Australia" habitat with red soil... and the aquarium and terrarium, of course.
Refreshments - drinks, ice-cream, coffee are sold in a restaurant at the side of the zoo opposite and the furthest to the entrance, but ice cream can be bought at several stalls througout the zoo. There is also a souvenir shop.
The ZOO may not be big by some standars, but with all the specialised exhibits, many interesting animals and an inquisitive child, it is definitely a good half-day of fun!

“Nice shaddy walk”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2012

It is nice to take a walk during warm days, because old oaks give nice shaddow. And animals are always interesting to see!
