Well worth a visit to see all the famous Croats graves and some extraordinary creations of ones last resort.

The lenght of this cemetry surpasses even the Ricolleta in Buenos Aires. Has an amazing architecture, a big dome over the chapel, many family crypts with amazing designs, its worth a visit and very well manicured areas, it is a live cemetry and see many people coming with flowers for the graves of their beloved. The president of the country is also interred here.

Architecturally, this must be one of the most impressive cemeteries in the world. The dominating feature near the main entrance is the tomb of Dr. Franjo Tudman, but there are also fascinatingly designed tombs to other lesser-known Croatian politicians, artists, writers and sportsmen,

The Mirogoj Cemetary is so beautiful and fascinating, it makes our western graveyards seem sterile and dull by comparison. We felt privileged to be able to wander through this sacred place, and examine the history of the city. It is very parklike, bring lunch and find a shady spot to linger.

The tram comes most of the way out, we had to walk for 15-20 minutes as I recall to reach it. We happened to be there on Easter Sunday, there were throngs of people and I would like to return when it was less busy.

It might sound strange, but Mirogoj was my favorite "attraction" in Zagreb. It is a beautiful oasis of tranquility. There is beautiful artwork and stunning archtechture to be seen. And also I believe a cemetary can be a good study of culture. If you go to Zagreb, do not miss Mirogoi. However be aware it can be slightly hard to find, if you take the tram, so I would advise you to take the bus directly there.
