First, we completely agree with the review from Australia. The rooms reeked of bad perfume, were unusually tiny, and, at best, could be described as a la bordello (but more like a filthy Caesars Palace circa 1970). When we were showed our room upon arrival, we walked about three steps from the reception desk and thought we were being shown to the laundry room. Instead, they told us, here is your room. It was very, very small, and worst of all, it was stuffy and smelly, maybe because you cannot open the windows without fear of being killed in the middle of the night, since they open onto an eerie, creepy park (our view consisted of a pile of rubble and a makeshift tent?). Whatever you do, dont look at the corners of the bathroom, as you might make yourself nauseous. We found it best to shower without corrective lenses (but with shower shoes). Did we mention the walls were peeling? P.S. When we asked for a bigger room, we were told this was the biggest room they had!

However, the piece de resistance was the hotel staff. They were very rude, as if it was our privilege to stay at this hotel, and we were nothing more than a burden on them. When we asked for a bar of soap, which had not been replaced by the cleaning lady (?), we were told NO! When we then approached a different member of the staff, we were greeted with a <What is it now?> To top it off, one morning when we dropped our keys at the desk before breakfast, we were told <Eat your breakfast, then you will pay me!> We thought that was maybe a bit rude and presumptuous.

In conclusion, DO NOT STAY HERE unless you are a masochist. It is a shame that Zagreb lacks nice, reasonably priced accommodations. Hopefully, this will change in the near future. In the meantime, prepare yourself to pay a high price for a <decent> place to stay.

I wouldn't agree with the other comment that this is a worst hotel in the world. Actually it is my favorite place in Zagreb to stay for 2-3 nights. (If you wish to stay longer it's better to book another hotel)

Pros - Clean, very good bathroom and shower, hotel is in the very centre of Zagreb, breakfast was ok (not the cold coffee as mentioned earlier)

Cons - The rooms are really parfumed (but you can open the window and freshen the air), rooms are small (if you come with many suitcases avoid this hotel), and the room design is strange (a bit of a kitch), beds a little bit uncomfortable.

Conclusion - for 2-3 nights it is perfect, it's near everything, shops, city squares, etc... But if you plan to stay longer - book another hotel.

My wife and I stayed in Hotel Ilica after forward booking on advice gained from Lonely Planet. We arrived late at night in January and were not in a position to go elsewhare at that time. The hotel reeked of cigarettes, and a perfume had been liberally sprayed around to freshen the rooms, thus compounding the problem. The decor is "a la bordello" with brown velour bedding embellished with gold tassels and seven spotlights lighting up the bed. Barely enough room for our luggage. The bed was lumpy and uncomfortable, and the window had to remain closed all night as there was a dark park outside the hotel with no security if open. Breakfast was paid for on arrival (payment required in advance in cash - no Visa) and when served consisted of cold coffee and stale breadrolls. On complaint I was advised that the bakery was closed. I have to list this as the worst hotel in the world in my reasonably extensive experience.
