“Surprisingly good hotel in Zagreb...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2014

We opt for this hotel in a big hurry and without any clue on what we can find there. Being a large group, looking not only for accommodation but for some meeting facilities (seminar room, projector, etc.) we asked if by chance, they can offer us all these. The answer was positive. We received a good price for accommodation and conference facilities for free. This made us to believe that the hotel will be a poor one, with no clients, old and obsolete facilities.
Arriving in Zagreb, at the hotel, we were totally surprised to find a very good hotel, with a lot of facilities, not one but several rooms fully equipped for seminaries, a big conference room, nice bar and good restaurant. all these nearby a big shopping center (Arena Mall) and a lot of other shopping facilities. The accommodation was good (minibar, shower, bath tube, clean and fresh towels, good cleaning and room services). Indeed so, it is a bit far from the city center but there are a series of common transportation possibilities nearby and taxis in Zagreb are quit cheap (5-6 Euros for a trip from the hotel to the city center). In conclusion, if you need to go in Zagreb, go for this surprisingly good hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the southern side, with the view to the green fields.

Hotel I was built around 1990s, when that area was just fields and grass. Hotel I is located on the outskirts of the area of New Zagreb, so it is very good for business people and people with cars. The tram and bus services are however close by and frequent. Rooms are air-conditioned and spacious with balconies, but not so glorious views. Bathrooms have bath and shower. But rooms need painting and decorating and generally sprucing up. More sockets would be use full and there is no safe which is very poor for tourists. There are no tea/coffee making facilities, which is particularly important as their breakfast is sub standard for British tourists. I don't expect a full English in Europe but three was no plain ham for English tastes. (which would actually be cheaper for the hotel !) The main complaint was that of a basic cheap foodstuff which was that bread was not rolls and was not fresh, the flavoured yoghurts soon ran out and were not replaced, otherwise the main restaurant serves very good food, which includes the a la carte with Croatian traditional specialities.

My friend and I decided to squeeze in a quick city break in Zagreb, but being so near to Xmas we decided to do it on the cheap. We're both pretty well travelled so we didn't have any particular expectations of the Hotel I, as it was only a 3*. So we could cope with the scratchy blankets, the lack of a kettle which I would have expected in a 3* hotel, the fact that the décor was ugly and 70s, or that there was either no heat or the central heating was full blast and couldn't be turned down. We could live with the cleaning staff shouting down the halls at each other and waking us up and the fact they never dusted. We weren't even that fussed about the mediocre food and we laughed at the fact that there was a hardcore porn channel 24 hours a day that any kid could just turn on without pin numbers. We weren't planning to spend a lot of time in the room, so makes no difference right?

But what really wrecked the holiday was the location. Firstly, it's in the middle of an ugly neighbourhood. Also websites claim "10 minutes" from the city centre by car. I find this hard to believe as you have to cross a highway system and the traffic is always busy. The taxis we got were more like 25 minutes. We were worse off; we decided Zagreb centre is a place for walking, so had opted to rely on the buses, which are every 30 minutes during the week and once an hour on weekends, last bus being around 11.30pm. The last thing we wanted to be was ruled by timetables. Of course this is not the hotel's fault, but the websites imply that it's easy to get into town, and in actual fact it's highly inconvenient.

Plus, we have since looked into it, and for the same price or a few pounds a night more you can have a much nicer place in the city centre. Even one of our taxi drivers said it was "the worst hotel in Zageb". Saving money cost us in the long run.

I could say all the bad things about this hotel, but I don't want to do that. This hotel has its advantages and disadvantages. Some people may not be so happy to stay in this hotel,it's theirs fault, they chose a 3* hotel. That means they should have expected lower standards and cheaper price. In fact, hotel is really good for big groups that stay over for only one night. The stuff is very organized on this issue. They are very patient, helpful and if they may not know your language they try to communicate with you to solve your problem.

I also recommend this hotel for school trips, because kids can not do many damage to this unrenovated,90's look hotel. All in all,the hotel has its own charms just don't split hairs.

Room Tip: In the season,if they are overbooked be satisfied to get any kind of room, and later you can move to...

Sadly the hotel was a disaster. Pretty bad to close our vacation in this hotel. It wasnt in the center as told, but 15km by car away from the center.
The hotel is old and stinks like cigarets, which is alowed in the rooms. There was no warm water - it was cold. The walls are so thin that you can hear the neighbour snoring. The beds were at least 15cm too short for us. It took ages in the restaurant before we got any service at the table and the staff barely spoke English. Simply not such a nice hotel, not even for one night.

Room Tip: Not our cup of tea.

We just came back from staying at this hotel and thank god it was only a one night stay.We stayed in the African room and the room was shabby, torn curtains, windows looked like they'd never been cleaned,a layer of dust on the headboard, but the worst was poo splashes up the toilet from previous guests. The entertainment was utter rubbish. The singer (and i use the term lightly) sang badly and with chewing gum in their mouth. The only positive was that the staff were lovely.

If you want to pay £120 for one night and have low standards of what you deem clean, then this is the hotel for you. Otherwise stay well away.

Room Tip: don't judge a book by its cover, the rooms look great on the website, but don't be fooled.

Probably the worst hotel I have stayed in. Everything is old dirty and decrepit. Staff are unhelpful, any complaint is met with "its not my problem". One of our party complained that there was no hot water and the response was "what do you expect, its an old hotel". Breakfast is inedible, rooms are grim, internet is the worst I have used in any hotel. Avoid!
