“Nice hotel”

Good location in the center of Zagreb.
Rooms are nice and clean. But the atmosphere of the hotel is not what you would expect from a 5 star hotel.
Breakfast is very expensive.
Big fitness club is connected to the hotel and available for guests.

I have staid at the Westin Zagreb for multiple business trips in Autumn 2013, and was very happy.

Rooms: I had a suite for each of my stays, as a complimentary upgrade thanks to my SPG Platinum status. I agree with other reviewers that the rooms are a bit on the older side, but that was not an issue for me. They are clean, and have high quality amenities (coffee machine, even an I-Pad).

Location: Zagreb is very "spread out", so you will need a car/taxi to most places anyway. The Westin is quite conveniently located to the business district.

Service: Service is efficient, and gets things done.

Breakfast: This was for me the low point of the hotel. Food quality is ok, but the breakfast room is run over by tour groups, so a quite noisy affair, and sometimes you might have to wait a few minutes for a table.

All in all, the Westin Zagreb is nothing exceptional, but a convenient, efficient business hotel. Certainly a place I would return to. Also, at roughly EUR 120 / night, very good price/quality ratio.

Stayed during a very warm October and management would not turn on the air conditioning as it was "not needed". Rooms were broiling during the day, especially on the upper floors.
Rooms and carpeting needed upgrading.

Very walkable to all the attractions and museums and on the tram line.

Great breakfast buffet in the restaurant.

My first and last stay in this hotel, a two night business trip. I am guessing this is a COMECON era construction which has been given a minimal face lift. Rooms are spacious and clean, but ventilation system is a disgrace. Lifts sound like an underground train coming through at speed. You have to have the windows open, and the hotel's miserable location means road, rail, tram and party noise in abundance. Reception staff friendly and trying hard, restaurant staff not so.

This hotel should not be called a Westin as it does not achieve Westin standards. But without the brand name it would be a good average conference hotel.

This is the old socialist era intercontinental hotel and it suffers from socialist era construction and layout. Once the heat comes on there can only be heat and no air conditioning so my first room was a sauna even with the heat off as it was on the 15th floor and heat rises. The temperature outside was 27 degrees C and inside there was no operational cooling. To prevent people jumping the windows are supposed to be only operable by 4 inches. But in most rooms people have broken the latch that keeps the window shut so that they can get air conditioning.

In my second room (13th floor) the window was broken in the open position so it opened 3 feet wide. When I looked up from the parking lot I could see that many rooms had windows open that wide even when it was clearly violating safety codes.

So obviously this hotel has a major problem with heat / air conditioning and safety compliance.

Also staff is not very well trained - 3 times when I was in my room staff entered without knocking or they knocked as they entered. Once maybe is a mistake but this happened so often I called the GM office to complain.

I would recommend the Esplanade over this hotel.

I must admit that this review will be inherently flawed - after all what can you expect if you get a free upgrade to the Presidential Suite.
The Suite is absolutely amazing - 180 m2 simply made to pamper you ... the bathroom of the master bedroom is more like another living room - a jacuzzi for two, sauna for two... and everything finished with great looking marble.
Ok... but setting that asside - the service does not have this attitute that you would normally expect from Westin staff. The food in the restaurant also does not make you ask for a second round all the time. All in all - its a really good place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade :)

I stayed at the Westin for several nights in September 2013 as part of a business trip. The Westin has everything you would expect from a good business hotel: nice, large rooms, complimentary wifi, nice beds, nice staff, and a nice gym. The conference facilities were also very good. This being said, this is probably not the type of hotel I would like to stay in on a private tour: a bit too groups/business minded, a bit old fashioned and lacking character. But if you look for a nice business hotel, this is the place.
