Esplanade Zagreb Hotel
Ranked #1 of 59 Hotels in Zagreb
Certificate of Excellence

Really the only act in town, if you are seeking quality accommodation. Rooms are of a good size, with traditional furnishings. Bathrooms are good too and are equipped with nice amenities; ours had a separate shower and large bathtub, which we always find preferable. Be aware that room sizes vary, and that those at the front, and on the side of the square, enjoy better views.

The hotel breakfast is good, but staff try to pretend there is only a buffet option (the costliest) when you can order a la carte for less money, depending on how much you plan to eat. We found the bar a bit slow and snooty - and it was disappointing to be told one evening that the bar had closed at midnight, only to find that it later re-opened for a private party.

Check-in and check-out is efficient. We also found the Concierge to be very helpful. Overall a very satisfactory city hotel, with only minor niggles.

The recently renovated Hotel Esplanade is located next to the underground train station in Zagreb and within five blocks walking distace to Old Town Zagreb. It retains the look of days long goneby with beautiful wood and marble. The staff are excellent and seem to actually care about the patrons. Rooms are large, clean and very comfortable; bathrooms are large, well lit and well stocked with quality amenities.
The hotel is a six story square and built around a large open area in the center. Inside rooms have no view other than the other inside rooms on the 6 floors. There is a ballroom on the ground floor in this center area. If you are unlucky enough to be a guest in an inside room during some type of celebration or noisy gathering, the room noise can be quite disturbing, especially at 2 oor 3 A.M.

I hate to be negative about any hotel and am generally "liberal" when it comes to compliments but this hotel is no five star. Upon arrival, the hotel appears to be every bit a five star accomodation. We reserved a room with two twin beds. We were given a room with one king and the other bed consisted of a sofa bed. When I stay at a five star hotel, I do not expect a sofa bed as a part of the accomodations. When we asked to be moved to an appropriate room, I was told that they would send someone up to the room to make up the sofa bed. The request for proper accomodations died on the spot. We went to breakfast only twice as the food was anything but satisfactory. The eggs (customary in the Adriatic) were scrambled and runny. The sausages were tough and obviously not fresh and everything was either luke warm or cold. We had dinner one evening and the food was adequate but we waited for over 30 minutes to get coffee after the meal. The service was really poor.
I have stayed at many five star hotels in Europe, China, South America and I fully realize that a U.S. five star is not a five star from other countries but this hotel fell well below the five star level in the things that truly count: accomodations, food and service. You can spruce up a facility and the Regency is indeed a classy looking hotel but this is like putting lipstick on a pig. It is still a pig.

The usual mode of arrival at The Regent appears to be in a rather smart car, Mercedes, BMW and even a Bentley dominated the drive. We chose a slightly different approach, and after a hot, tiring 8 hour ride from Prague, we arrived at the hotel entrance on our rather filthy motorcycles. Despite this, the welcome from all of the staff couldn't have been better; friendly, helpful and polite - all topped off with a free glass of champagne and posing for pics in the lobby.
The room was spacious and very well appointed, and the food in the restaurant very good too.
Overall, a fabulous place to stay and highly recommended.

Stayed at the Regent Esplanade in Zagreb for a week for a conference. The hotel is very beautiful (seems to have been very well renovated?) and the staff could not have been more helpful. It is situated near the railway station but the centre of town is a pleasant 15 minute walk away. A couple of minor quibbles , the "health centre" could do with some more gym equipment and the computers and internet access in the business centre were pretty tough to use. Definitely needs some upgrading.

All in all though a very lovely hotel and you definitely get a sense of the history of the place.

This hotel reeks of luxury from the moment you walk in. While staying there on business, I had the pleasure of spending an evening at this stunning hotel.

Everything about this hotel reminds you that you are staying at a 5-star hotel. Amenities are fantastic and the bathroom makes you want to shower and bathe 3-5 times a day.

Centrally located, quiet and a great place to stay to make your stay in Zagreb comfortable and enjoyable.

It is with good reason that this property is rated among the best hotels in the world. The staff is cordial - not friendly nor cold, which is in line with the professional atmosphere the hotel seeks to project. You will be welcomed by professionals and not Thai smiles, which some people seem to be put off by. But if you look closely, you will see that thier attitude is in line with thier dignified image. My room was not large but had enough room for a desk as well as a sitting chair and table, besides the queen size bed. The bed and indeed, the whole room was well decorated with quality, from the marble bathrooms (with shower on one side and bath on the other - while the room wasn't large, the bathroom is large) to the carpets. The restaurant is excellent although their isn't a large selection. In the immediate vicinity to the hotel are endless restaurants, so go out and enjoy them. Top down, a great hotel. The only items that I noticed, if I have to be picky, is the TV is old; you might expect in a property like this to have and LCD TV with PayTV channels. However, I rarely turn my TV on, so it really doesn't bother me. Second, A/C is central, as you will find most everywhere throughout the Balkans. Sorry to say, but you will be hard pressed to find individual A/C controls anywhere. Therefore, temperature can vary widely through the hotel, so make sure you ask for a room that makes sence for you - if you like your room 25C as many people do in some parts of the world, the top floor is best in the winter. If you ask them when you make your reservation, they should be able to guide you to a room you will enjoy. This is perhaps my biggest piece of advice when traveling in the Balkans - ask about AC for when you are arriving. I personally like my rooms cold while I sleep with many blankets and I usually find the hotels very helpful when ask about it in advance.
