Description: The restaurant Lanterna na Dolcu (Lanterna at the Dolac Market) was opened on 10 September 2010 in the magical atmosphere of an old manor. Brothers Tomislav and Ivan shared the same vision from the beginning - to offer traditional Zagreb food at reasonable prices at a restaurant with a pleasant family vibe. It wasn't long before word about the Lanterna restaurant at the Dolac Market spread all the way to London. Every morning, we get ingredients from Dolac ladies called kumice who sell their produce at the market and we guarantee that each food item used in our kitchen is fresh. The restaurant is located in one of the oldest streets in the city's old centre, in an over 300 years old basement. The restaurant's vaulted ceiling with brickwork that nicely stands out creates a unique and warm atmosphere. It is here that supreme pleasures of traditional Zagreb cuisine blend with scents of history and city legends. Our goal was to combine modern and traditional in both the interior design and on the plate so we browsed through an old cookbook from 1854 that we found in the Zagreb City Museum, looking for ideas. We did not want to exclude authentic Croatian tastes from our dishes, but we also added some unique ingredients to all our traditional menu items.

“Simply great”

There is not much to say about this restaurant; it is just very nice. Dinner in Zagreb is generally very cheap and this is no exception. This restaurant excels in quality, though. I had the beef medaillons in berries-pepper sauce, which was a phenomenal and unique combination of sweet and spicy. The meat was very tender and the balance in the sauce was perfect.
The owner (or head chef?) was standing outside and thanking its customers. From a small conversation it was very clear that this man showed a lot of passion for his restaurant and menu. I enjoyed it very much and I most definitely recommend it.

“Brilliant restaurant”

This was a gem of a find, a lovely restaurant off the main strip. The waiter was really friendly recommending the best wines to taste and it had a lovely atmosphere.
The food was soooo tastey with great flavours.

“Top quality food & wine, topped with fantastic service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2013

The restaurant really is top notch; both the quality of food, the welcoming service and a the restaurant cellar had a bit of history too so we felt like we were continuing our sightseeing! Wendined in the restaurant on an extremely hot day in Zagreb. The waiter immediately made sure we were comfortable and understood the menu options.

The food menu had a wide choice at reasonable prices. This was a flavour of Zagreb - especially through the sauces. The Lanterna platter to start is highly recommended and comfortably served 5 of us with a couple of salads without spoiling our main dishes. Mains were all very generous and cooked to perfection plus full of flavour. Different flavours such as blueberry/pepper sauce with a beef dish were very tasty. A big selection of Croatian wine and the waiter has a wide knowledge to help you pick the best - we chose a gorgeous white wine priced at c80 kuna - very good value!

White table cloths etc. make this restaurant feel special. Located in a quieter area than the main old town street and with a great outdoor and indoor area.

The service was second to none - so welcoming and informative from start to finish. We felt very well looked after and never rushed. The waiter showed us all the cellar which had a bit of a tale. Tip very well deserved!
