Me and two friends came to visit Zagreb in september 2012. We stayed in hostel nocturno for two nights. We had chosen this hostel because we had read in their descriptions that there was wifi and a kitchen available (these things were, apart from the location and cleanliness, important for us).

When we arrived, we received a warm welcome from the receptionist. The staff was very helpful and enthusiastic and the location of the hostel was great, but we weren't satisfied with our accomodation. First, our "kitchen" seemed to be a filthy place without any equipment to cook or eat (there was only one steelpan with remnants of burnt food). Second, the wifi connection didn't work because our room was located at the other side of the street. Moreover, the bunk bed wasn't safe because the upper bed didn't have a stepledder and no 'fence', so my friend almost fell out of the bed during the night.. we were also disappointed that the reading lights didn't work in our room.

Zagreb, the city itself, was great but we would not recommend hostel nocturno.

HOSTEL NOKTURNO is perfectly placed in the shadow of Zagreb's iconic cathedral. Easy walking distance to the main shopping centres and sights and...adjacent to Tkaliciceva ulica, a street with more 'watering holes' in half a kilometre than any other place I can recall! It buts onto a couple of super cafe/restaurants on Skalinska and so all human needs are catered for.. perfectly placed, but...make sure you have a map of Zagreb, as thr streets heading up to the cathedral are labyrinthine, it's very easy to get lost!
Staff on Recepcija - notably Ivona & Irena whilst I was there - are fantastic, friendly and always happy to indulge the whims of the eccentric traveller. Room and beds well up to standard, with a choice of accommodation and tariffs available. Super place, didn't want to leave and come home!

Room Tip: Talk over your needs before arriving. Nokturno is popular and you'll get what they have left if...

To start with: the Nokturno is not a hotel, it is a hostel; big difference!

No matter what and how, when I am in Zagreb I'll go to Hostel Nocturno.(it is mostly written with a "C" indeed) I know I'm very very old, but I'm never the talk of the hostel, they don't chase me away, on the contrary: they respect me a lot.
The Nocturno is at an amazing location in town: it is very close to up-town, at walking distance to the main place Jelacica, at walking distance to the famous cathedral and very close to public transport.

The walk up to the rooms of the hostel is already magic! (reception has found a tric to welcome you: they ask by email your arrival time and will call your name, without seeing but only hearing you coming in) The only private room they have is worth the money you pay for.
The room is opposite the reception and next to one of the shared bathrooms. There is no noise, house rules are strictly enforced.
As I say: the private room is a meter(!) from the reception, which is part of the common room, where you can make your coffee, thea, soup, light meal; where you can watch TV and where you go go on the internet, for free!!!
Ladies at the reception speak many languages.
If ever you'd like to stay at the only private room of the hostel, book well in advance.

We stayed in the apartment in the building adjacent to the hostel on the second story. There was a small kitchen and dining area and the room was relatively clean. The beds were slightly comfortable but the apartment is near the main square, pedestrian streets, and nightlife so there was a steady beat of club music playing even past 4 am. Hand soap, towels, and toilet paper were provided and the kitchen was stocked with dishware and a few pots.

Three of us stayed in this hostel for one night. We were on our trip to Zagreb because of Etihad airlines meeting in Esplanada, and we needed a clean quiet and nice place to rest and stay for one night.
This place was the perfect one. The reception lady is amazing! Very helpful, and cheerful. Room is not so big but it is very nice and clean. Bathroom is big and clean. There is also a big lounge room with kitchen and free coffee and tea with sweet little notes on everything so you can manage easy.
Even we had to check out before 12:00 and our meeting was between 8 am and 18 pm , a lady offered us to leave all the bags and after meeting to come back, change and take a shower.
Also a good thing is that in front of the Hostel there are restaurants and cafes.
Thank you for a pleasant stay.

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night on our way from Hungary to the Plitvice Park in Croatia. It was a short, flat walk from the train station, and the location is very central, right behind the main square, and near the farmer's market on a narrow side street with lots of restaraunts nearby. It was very hard to find the street sign for Skalinska and then once on the street, hard to find the upstairs entrance to the hostel, although a waiter helped us with that. Once upstairs, the hostel is new, pleasant, clean, and quiet. We stayed in a private double, and shared a nice, clean bathroom in the hall. The furniture and bedding all looks to be new and in the spirit of Ikea. The front staff were strict but through, and we had some good, cheap, italian fare in the street below. The odd thing about the staff, in a rather comical yet sad way, was how disparaging and dismal they were about the city, the hostel, and even all of Croatia. They actually disagreed with positive things that we said about their own establishment - pretty unusual for front desk staff! The main disadvantage is Zagreb, there's nothing really here...good as a stop-off but not for much else. It seems that the post-communist, post-Balkan war Zagreb has new shops and fresh coats of paint, but some vital spirit, energy and/or vibe seems to be lacking. While seemingly safe, and pleasant, this capital somehow feels drab and depressed. The only thing worth seeing I would say is the Museum of Naive Art maybe - it had some neat paintings and postcards, albeit overpriced and small. We took the train in from Budapest, spent one night, and then walked down to the bus station, (conveniently located pretty centrally and near the train station) -from here take a bus to Plitvice Park. Along the way you can take in the tradgedy of the recent war in the form of abandoned and bullet-ridden villages and homes, and then you after much twisting and turning (wear a sea-band bracelet if prone to motion sickeness) you will arrive at the magnificent Plitivice Park - well worth the trip! One of the top 2 most spectacular days we spent in 6 wks in eastern europe!
