It’s a treat to drive a few minutes out of Sofia, and up the hill to Chepishev in Boyana. With Vitosha rising above it, Boyana itself has an almost alpine-village feel.
Chepishev Restaurant is a relaxed place with experienced staff and an understated style. In summer the upstairs terrace is a treat with views of the city below and the mountain above. In winter you’ll probably eat downstairs, a wooden-beamed room which houses an enormous display of Scotch whisky – said to be the biggest such collection in Eastern Europe.
There’s a long and interesting menu. As a starter the three of us ordered the Chepishev salad platter - a selection of Bulgarian salads nicely presented and a great way to start the meal.
For main the main course, one of my guests chose trout, which he said was delicious – it certainly looked good. My other guest was equally pleased with his steak. My spinach soufflé was perhaps the least successful dish. For pudding I had the strained yoghurt honey and ground walnut - delicious.
This is a great restaurant for entertaining. The atmosphere is unhurried; the views are great; and the food terrific. Over the years we have eaten here many times… and will keep going back.
