This restaurant is a replacement of a former bierstube, serving excellent food for lunch and dinner. Established by a Bulgarian graduate of the American University in Bulgaria who returned from business and an MBA in the USA, it features a varied menu with an Italian flavor, including traditional Bulgarian dishes with new and innovative twists, international dishes and desserts. Everything is carefully thought out, whether it be the design of place mats and menus, to the selection of permanent and special dishes. There is a good wine list and good house wines by the glass or half-liter. Prices are surprisingly moderate for this quality: formal dining at casual prices. Lunches are a bargain; gourmet food at neighborhood bar and grill prices. Inside seating is comfortable in a minimalist design; outside is the feature, two decks facing Roman ruins surrounding the natural spring that feeds the Sofia mineral water supply and the former baths. Easily reached by public transport, a short walk from the central Metro station and refurbished city central market. Melo takes reservations and if the increase in clientele continues, are advised.
