“Hemus Business Centre”
Reviewed May 7, 2014

I have an other review of Hemus, however since early this year (2014) Hemus opened it's new wing the Hemus Business Centre where they are offering Business Suites. These rooms are new, stylis and obviously much better than the rooms in the old part. I really liked it and I think it worth the litle upcharge compared to the old rooms. In the room the only neggative thing for me is the bath tub. In general I like showers better than a bath tub in the room. Unfortunately the breakefast did not improve. You can try but there is almost no choice, so probably you can have better breakfast next door at the Sofia City Center (mall). The hotel is not in the center but not very far. In 30 minutes you can walk to Vitosha Bulvard which is a nice place to eat out on during a warm day. Taxi is cheap is Sofia so you can always get to the center for a few leva in a few minutes.

I was invited to this hotel by the Bulgarian Association of Writers. Have visited this hotel a few years ago and hoped it has been improved but everything remained the same. Arriving late at night first thing I was told I have no reservation and thanks to the man from the association accompanying me I was found. The room was on 10th floor with a fantastic view of Sofia and the Vitosha mountain but that was all - the light in the room was poor and on the last day there was only 1 small light left. There was no telephone - there was one modern looking in the room but it was not functioning. I was told there are works of renovation in the hotel and this has caused a lot of problems but no one cared about this, the problems were there and troubling. The last night there when there was no light from the sockets on the wall, I was offered to change a room, but why should I do this a night before leaving? Indeed breakfast was good and satisfying but even though it was published in all the elevators that there is a nice restaurant, when I wanted to dine in the hotel with a friend, we did not find anything serving food......

I stayed for 2 nights there. The service was friendly and the breakfast was satisfying. The only thing that we didn't like is that the bathroom was pretty smelly when we first entered, not because it wasn't clean, but maybe because it was closed for quite some time.

However we needed a budget hotel, so it did the thing for us.

The hotel is in a nice building, in a very good location in walking distance from the city center. But as hotel needs a lot to be done, the rooms are very sad and you can smell the humidity in them. There is a 10 euro difference between the normal room and the renovated ones, but the renovated are exactly the same then the normal ones, but they have the mini bar. Another positive thing is the price. Next time in Sofia I will choose another hotel.

This is an average hotel with 80's decoration, but conveniently located near historical downtown and public transportation. There is a mall across the street, in case that wandering around the city center won't leave you enough time for more proper shopping, though there is nothing special to buy from Bulgaria other than antiquities and generally (vintage) staff that can be found in street markets. The rooms are simple but generally clean, the bathroom too, wi-fi is fast enough and reliable, but the TV monitors are very small and old and the antenna./satellite signal very bad. You cannot actually watch TV. Breakfast is mediocre, but dinner is really good. However, especially one of the waiters is extremely rude and unprofessional, while generally the staff is mediocre.
This is an average hotel but good enough for a low budget.

Room Tip: High floor rooms with a view at the main streets and not at the back yard with surrounding buildings...

We stayed for a night and I can't say we were too impressed. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad hotel, but it's not great. I wasn't as clean as we would have liked it to be and the breakfast was average. But we really liked the location - it's within walking distance from the city center and there's a shopping mall right across the street. We didn't see the staff, so I can't really say anything about that. The receptionist didn't speak much English, but she was nice though.
