We recently stayed at the Renaissance Hotel in Sofia Bulgaria as part of a group tour. The rooms are basic but clean. We had a balcony overlooking the main street and street noise is definitely a problem at this hotel. The tram passes both directly in front of the hotel and a second tram passes on a nearby perpendicular street. The breakfast was OK. The beds are OK. The hotel itself is a pink building. It is easy walking distance from many of the sights of Sofia and in the opposite direction is one of Sofia's malls. The location is very good.
I would say this is a tradeoff between extra comfort and location, but for two nights before joining at the group hotel and for one night at the end of our tour, we stayed at a nearby hotel equally convenient but located on a quiet street. The Renaissance provided better views and was approximately 10 Euros cheaper than the other hotel. But, the other hotel offered a more spacious room on a quiet street with a more updated furnished room and more comfortable bed. The bathroom at the other hotel was much more updated and had a rain shower head. The breakfast at the other hotel was significantly better and the service at the other hotel was significantly better.
So - I would say that the Renaissance is an acceptable hotel in Sofia's central district, but obviously we chose to upgrade for 10 euros additional per night to get a quieter location with equally good access to the sights and a significantly upgraded room.
