In the middle of one of Sofia's main squares, just out of the parlement, in front of SAS Radisson hotel, the statue just went thru a major renovation work. The status glorify a foreigner head of state, for having helped freeing Bulgaria from Ottoma rule at the end of the 19th century. Where elses in the world a country have the statue of a past foreign head of state ? having seen Churchill statue in the middle Trocadero square in France for exemple, worth seeing

Did not get to see much of it as it was being restored but a big panel with a picture of the Tsar helps you bring it back with some imagination.

The statue of the Tsar Liberator is away being restored and the center of Parliament Square is being refurbished, both efforts long overdue. It appears as if there will finally be some decent benches in the area and one can hope the lighting is improved.

Very fine statue, both the horse (eg fineness of the reins) and the extra statues round the lower part of the plinth, which were explained in my Bradt guidebook to Sofia as: the battle for Stara Zagora in 1877, treaty of San Stefano in 1878, parliamentary assembly at Veliko Turnovo in 1879.

It is a monument in the center of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. It was erected in honour of Russian Emperor Alexander II who liberated Bulgaria of Ottoman rule during the Russo-Turkish War.
