Owner description: The National Institute of Archaeology with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences covers the complete study of the culture of tribes and peoples who have occupied present day Bulgaria from the remote past until the 18th century. The Museum of Archaeology hosts the most numerous collections in Bulgaria and its exhibitions reveal it as one of the most important centers in the country for promotion of the cultural heritage of present day Bulgaria. NIAM-BAS was established in 1949 as a follower and successor of the Department of Valuables - part of the Library established in Sofia in 1879 and reformed into a National Museum in 1892 - and the Bulgarian Institute of Archaeology (1921), which was the first academic institute in Bulgaria.

This museum has terrific exhibits. It was once an old mosque, which is interesting in and of itself. This museum houses some of the oldest gold treasures ever found in Europe and also has great exhibits of icons. The main area on the first floor has huge statues and stone carvings - just like things you would find in Greece! This museums holds many Bulgarian treasures and so much history that most people didn't know Bulgaria had!

I've been to many museums in Eastern Europe and they are usually not so well organized, informative, nor provide good English. So this one surprised me because it was above average.

My favourite part was the explanation of how humans developed into civilizations, and how Bulgaria was the bridge for human migration from its origins into Europe. But the artifacts were also quite nice, mostly in Roman and Greek style, and at the very least there was English labelling for the majority of them.

It is located in the centre of Sophia and is cheap to enter, so go enjoy!

Really nice to see archaeology from another culture. Really close to the centre, so really easy to get to. Pretty cheap too, and worth every penny.

Some of the greatest archeological treasures of Bulgaria lie there. 14000 years of human activity in this region documented and exhibited!
