“Visit June 2013”
Reviewed June 22, 2013

When I visited the permanent collection was closed.... only a student exhibition, and a temporary retrospective exhibition of a Bulgarian modernist painter who recently died. Absolutely no information available in English. The student work was of 16 -18 year old work, (Students seen sketching around every monument in Sofia).. but was interesting in so far as it seemed to sum up the atmosphere of Sofia.. more many female than male artists, female work mainly optimistic and romantic while the males exhibits seemed harsh and depressing... given that there seemed few unemployed young women , and the well educated ones in the shops and restaurants appeared quite happy, while their male contemporaries did not .. perhaps its a good representation of the mood of the nation. The temporary retrospective was weird in that the painter was clearly very prolific, and produced several themed series of painting, which were not hung together...??? Once again decent lighting would have greatly improved the exhibition.

“Nothing too special”
Reviewed June 14, 2013 via mobile

I was expecting some really impressive art, but what I saw we're four exhibitions, and was impressed probably only by about three pieces. There was also quite a random mix, no real theme. What I did like was that from far away some of the paintings looked about ten times better than up close, but even that is just me searching for positives. Could have done a lot better.

“Not much”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

Very small and limited in scope. There was a special 'Nudes' exhibition when I visited along with a 'Hollywood Portraits' exhibit. They were both interesting.

“Superb little gallery”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

There was an excellent exhibition on showing the development of Bulgarian art from the late 19th Century until the present. Works by artists I was unfamiliar with, many of whom were first rate, very well laid out, and very informative.

“Ancient King's Palace Turned to National Museum”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

The Museum is small, but very rich. It can be visited for an hour and a half - two hours, but art connaisseurs will be delighted. It represent every important Bulgarian artist, without being boring. At the ground flour there is the Ethnographic museum too.
