This church has a lot of history on its walls. And yet it stays beautiful and strong. I would recommend visiting it just before sundown. The light reflects in a magnificent way from its colored glass windows.

Another beautiful Orthodox church with a magnificent chandelier inside. The frescos are lovely and the church is beautifully restored. This church has a very nice feel to it and the locals seem to truly revere it as was demonstrated by many as they humbly and prayerfully knelt in front of icons. Worth a visit.

I was nicely surprised that many of the frescoes were already restored. When I visited the church a few years ago, it was full of scaffolding and nothing could be seen. Today, the church is still partly in the process of restoration yet I was delighted to see it inside. The church interior is splendid; beautiful images from the frescoes will follow you everywhere around.

Like most other Bulgarian churches and monasteries, admission is free. The church is located on the square of the same name, in front of the Sheraton Hotel. As the little book says (it can be bought from the church shop) the past of the church is shrouded in mystery. It lies above the crossroads of ancient Serdica.

The church was probably built in the 12th century and had stone foundations with wooden construction. It remained wooden until the middle of the 19th century, unlike most other churches in the city. In the 19th century the old building was demolished to make a place for a new larger cathedral.

The remains of Serbian king Stephen Milutin are buried here and for that reason the church acquired another name, Holy King („Свети Крал“, „Sveti Kral“),in the late 19th and early 20th century. There is quite an interesting tradition to celebrate the day of St Stefan Milutin, 30th October. The remains are taken to the altar and then the body of the saint is changed into new clothes. His old clothes are cut into small pieces which are given to those present for a blessing.

On 16th of April in 1925 the church took part in a tragic episode of Bulgarian history. It was largely destroyed in a bomb blast assassination attempt on Tsar Boris III and the Bulgarian political and military elite: 193 people (according to the church guide book) were killed.

After that terror act there were many discussions over the St Nedelja Church’s fate. Some people no longer wanted to have a church on that ‘bloody’ place. Others thought that the church had to be moved to another place as it was in the way of the traffic. Finally, the decision was taken and the church was restored in its original place.

I visited the church early in the morning. It was pretty busy; many people came here to light a candle just before they were off to work.

This is a great church just on Vitosha Blvd. It is right in the center of town and a nice place to see. It is really big, both on the inside and out. On the weekends in the Spring, Summer and Fall there is always a wedding taking place.

A beautiful church with great history. The church gives you the feel of old time churches. A must see when in Sofia!
