“Worth visiting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2014

It's just grand. The architecture, the frescoes and the paintings inside the cathedral will mesmerise you for hours together. The place to visit if you are in Sofia as a tourist. Sadly photography is not allowed inside.

“Cathedral Saint Alexandar Nevski”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2014

On New Years Day my wife and I decided to visit the Cathedral Saint Alexandar Nevski (orthodox). We've seen the place from the outside but decided to have a look inside. We just managed to see a religious ceremony, a mass we guessed and then an interesting thing happened. A couple of priest came out and one was giving wine from a spoon to the congregation and the other was giving pieces of bread, like Holy Communion. There were camera people filming and I asked a lady journalist what it was all about. She said that in Greek orthodox religion they fast for 40 days before Christmas, ( we Catholics only fast before Easter, but the Orthodox Fast before Christmas ans Easter) and they have confessions a week before Christmas and the ceremony that we saw was like atonement for their sins. The interior is great, photos are not allowed, but the locals were taking photos so did I , although I was told off a couple of times. If in Sofia this place is worth a visit.
