Owner description: Completed in 1912, St. Alexander Nevsky Patriarchal Cathedral Stauropigial Memorial-Church is an impressive landmark in Sofia. The church was built as a memorial to the 200,000 Russian soldiers who died in the Russo-Turkish Liberation War (1877-1878).

Nice church with typical Russian architecture that has its inspiration in Byzantine architecture. It has impressive interior with large dome, but unfortunately taking photos is forbidden. I saw some people taking photos but I'm man respects rules so I didn't used my camera. I should have cause now I regret it.

The Alexander Nevski Church is simply a 'must do' when visiting Sofia. The architecture is simply beautiful and the details worth exploring with a short walk around the church. Inside, it's fairly dark but very peaceful and quiet, only the flickering of candles for reflection and a few open windows letting in the sunlight. I seemed to miss any service and also the coaches of tourists that must have visited earlier, because there were coaches parked nearby. A real shame you can't take photos inside!

This visit was made on a typical day. A priest was out front talking casually with someone, and paid us no attention. The priest inside, though, seemed a little edgy (perhaps with 14 people descending - never mind in reverent silence - upon his space, evidently, to gawk, rather than offer prayers!). Pity that photography isn't allowed. Artwork is impressive, the chandileer is majestic, and for persons interested in church history, this is a worthwhile visit (along with someone who might know the history and whisper the meaning of what one sees as one goes along).

This is the church that always looks great from the outside. The door carvings, masonry, gold dome, etc. are spectacular, like the crown jewel of Sofia. On the inside, the church is certainly imposing and ornate, but also very dark. It's not exactly cheerful-looking, although probably worth a look if you have the chance.

The Church is very nice and of course a must see when you are in Sofia, but don't buy a €3 ticket to go downstairs and have a boring time... nothing to see there at all!!
