We booked to stay in the Mostel Hostel after reading reviews on the Lonely Planet and Hostel.com. I booked direct and recieved a perfectly written english reply after confirming the flight numbers and arranging airport transfer. On arriving in Sophia we were approached by a very dodgy taxi driver and offered a lift. We refused because we knew that the Hostel were collecting us. Half an hour later and still no sign, no change to phone and no helpful airport staff. After ALOT a haggling got a taxi but the Hostel was down some really dogdy back streets and had a small unlit sign. On entering we walked up 2 flights of really dirty unlit stairs and was followed by a male who was terrifying. After doging all the empty alcohol bottles we rang the doorbell. The place was so bad, I waited halfway down the stairs so if we needed to run we could - yes it was that bad. It was opened by a young girl who then rapidly told us that they were full and had no bookings in my name. By now is was 2 am. We persuaded her to help us find somewhere to stay and she called a taxi She also requested that the male who followed us in give us a hand which we rapidly declined. After collecting a leaflet we looked around and although similar was not as portrayed. The building smelt badly, was unkempt. We were taken to another equally bad establishement that cost us 40Lv for 3 hours sleep. Mostel Hostel never again.
