This is based in our experience with my Bulgarian friend last Apr 27th. I got an invitation to have an early dinner in this Restaurant.

Good mussels. We tried 3 different dishes and the three of them were very good.
Mussels with rice well very well prepared, with some herbs and spices. Don't expect having grained rice in this type of dish. From the other end, the Mussels in wine preparation were also having a good taste. Finally, but it was the first, we did a try a Mussels soup/cream (Sea mirage)....fantastic...I think this dish can compete against the classic clam chowder (in Boston)..

The only consideration is, try to get a table far from the road, to avoid mainly the noise, sometimes you may have, due public transportation...cars, motorcycles.

Give a chance to be out of Sofia. Pancharevo lake is 30mins far from Sofia city. If you are driving, it will be even less. Do some trekking around the lake and refresh your palate with Mussels. :)

First of all, I suggest you disregard the first reviewer of this restaurant: I imagine he confused this establishment, which is beside Lake Pancharevo just outside Sofia, with its original incarnation in Kavarna. This one is several hundred kilometres from the Black Sea!

That said, I suggest you also do yourself a favour and give this eatery a miss. First the good points: the service is friendly and efficient, and the "live beer" was fine.

Unfortunately, that's the end of the good stuff. The location has potential, being beside the lake, but you can't really see it and there's a noisy main road right outside the restaurant. The food is patchy, to be kind: the Shopska Salad was okay but then it is pretty much everywhere in Bulgaria.

Obviously, this restaurant specialises in mussels but unfortunately the chef hasn't been taught how to cook them. My companion tried "Mussels Burgas-style", which seems to mean "dried-up, carbonised and then smothered in black pepper"; I've never before eaten mussels the size and consistency of small over-roasted nuts. They were stuffed with rice which was okay but couldn't soften them up at all. I was aiming for a "Moules Frites" experience and chose shelled mussels in a wine sauce which were small and shrivelled but at least not hard; the chips I ordered were soggy and greasy. The toilets were small, cramped and in need of refurbishment.

We were concerned about the mussels exacting revenge on us during our drive home but this didn't happen. The bill was okay - 34 leva (circa 17 euros) for the two of us but we certainly won't be back to investigate the rest of the menu, especially as the Restaurant Lebed is a few hundred metres away from the Dalboka.
