The National Ethnographic Museum in Sofia has a splendid collection of ethnic clothing from around Bulgaria. It is a unique collection of folklore and is well presented in the former Royal Place. There is plenty of reading stuff to go with the collection. There is also a few DVD’s to watch and music to listen to. So take your time and imagine how all these items were created by hand many years ago. It is a very colour full exhibition of rugs and clothing, spinning wheel and looms. I just loved the bead work and especially the hunter’s outfit. There is also a remarkable bride, groom and priest outfit not to be missed. This is the best collection of Bulgarian textiles I have seen so far.

Very cute and interesting. Beautiful and well-preserved fabrics. Pretty reconstruction of the environment and lifestyle. But nothing is said of music, amulets and legends. Very small and decommissioned. To improve.Very cute and interesting. Beautiful and well-preserved fabrics. Pretty reconstruction of the environment and lifestyle. In order to be always interesting (and to show all of the items they might have), the exhibitions in this place are always rotating. Which is normal for every kind of exhibition space, but as little as this museum is; it feels like a big change every time.

If the size of the exhibition puts you out, think it twice. The people working in there knows their job and if you ask you can get lots of information that will fill the blanks left by the lack of artefacts.

That said; the size could be an advantage as you get a deeper knowledge about a portion of a particular culture than you would if the exhibition had a wider scope.

It is a humble attempt to portray the ethnic lifestyle of Bulgaria from the costumes to the dance and music. However it is extremely small and limited in its scope. You will be done in less than 15 minutes.

I accidentally bought this ticket because its in the same building as the art gallery and I decided to go in rather than exchanging the ticket. The guide speaks English very well and really knows his stuff! He brought me through all of the rooms giving me a Bulgarian history lesson. It was so much better than I thought it would be. Definitely go. It's so interesting.
