The rooms are spacious, large bathroom, and comfortable bed. Easy to get around the city centre from this location. The staff are very polite and helpful. Good inexpensive restaurants within walking distance.

I have visited and reviewed this hotel before and each time is an enjoyable stay:-

Location:- The hotel is ideally located in the square opposite the Parliment building. All of the main city sights are well within walking distance of this hotel as are the main parks that are great for relaxing in.

Hotel:- The hotel is a modern curved building. There are currently renovations that are taking place behind the reception area and in the mezzanine area above, but these are largely unseen as they are well screened off - I was only aware of the extent of the work, when there was a scheduled power cut and I had to walk down the emergency stairs, through some of the work areas - One point here is that the only lighting on the emergency stairs was candles on each landing, so it was rather dark and dangerous.

Arrival:- The check-in staff were very pleasant at the pleasant check-in desk

Room:- The room was on the 3rd floor and overlooked the square and parliment building opposite. On the plus side, the traffic on the main road between the square and the parliment building was generally fairly light, however, this was partially due to the fact that there were frequent anti-government protests and a make-shift protester camp around the statue in the centre of the square, around the statue. - I was getting rather sick of the sound of beating drums, but this generally happened intensely in the morning as the working day started, then sporadically during the day.

The room was clean and pleasantly furnished and had a flat screen TV. The adjoining en-suite was pleasantly fitted-out - The one problem with the bathroom was that on 2 occassions extra towels had to be requested as they had skimped on replacements after the clean.

Bar / Restaurant:- I have visited a couple of times since the restaurant / bar area was refurbished. Although the original set-up was tired, the concept was better that the refurbishment. I think they have spent a lot of money on the refurbishment, but it just isn't a comfortable place to be in. One of the main problems is that the tables and chairs are just too low. It is like someone accidentaly cut 3 inches off of a chair leg by mistake - and compensated by cutting 3 inches off all the other legs. The table and chair heights are somewhere inbetween the height of normal tables and chairs - and the wee stools and tables you see people drinking at all over Turkey.

I never enjoyed the breakfast as much on my recent visit. The selection was ok at the buffet, much better than a lot of places I have stayed at, but for some reason I seem to recollect that it used to be better, with better bacon and sausages. Although the breakfast is a buffet, the waiting staff serve tea and coffee and take orders for your choice of egg. On one of the mornings my travelling buddy did order poached eggs - and after chasing them up and waiting for 20 mins they were delivered to the wrong table, which was quite remarkable as there were only 3 tables occupied. Even more remarkable was the person that got stuck into the eggs that they hadn't even ordered.

I never used the bar at the hotel on this occasion, as I found out on my last trip that the prices in the hotel were about twice the prices in the bars.

Facilities:- The hotel has a small fitness room and sauna, which I never got around to using. However, we did use the bikes that the hotel now supplies free of charge for the use of guests. I don't recall seeing this on previous visits, but it is great that the hotel does this. Last year, I did the free Sofia bike tour, and it was the intention to do this again, however, after booking the bikes at the hotel, we just set off on the general direction that we took on last years bike tour, notching up 20km through the city parks and woodland - GREAT!

Staff:- The staff in the hotel were all great (apart from the delayed egg delivery at breakfast!).
The reception staff and concierge helped with advice on how to get to the mountain and where to go (excellent cable-car takes you up the mountain) and assisted with booking the bikes.

General:- I struggled to decide on the rating for this hotel, I initially rated it as a 3 but decided at the last minute to change it to 4. The main reason for the upgrade is due to the staff. In addition, for what I was after, the location was excellent. The room was no better than I would expect to see in a modern budget hotel in the U.K., such as a city centre Premier Inn. In reality, I would have scored this as a 3.5.

The Radisson Blu Grand Hotel in Sofia is located right in the middle of everything. You are just a couple of minutes walking away from the Cathedral, the main street and the parliament. There are quite a few nice restaurants around the area as well and I'll recommend you try Bankovich and Spaghetti Kitchen which both are located only 200 meters away from the hotel.

Having been at other Radisson Hotels I would not classify the Hotel in Sofia as a five star hotel. Parts of the hotel is pretty run down, but you can't really complain about the price - it was really cheap (compared to prices in western europe). The room I got was huge, but unfortunately faced the construction work going on at the backside of the hotel. The construction work started at 8 in the morning in the weekdays and on saturday as well. Sleeping without earplugs if you get a room on the backside might be a problem.

The «Tequila» bar in the front of the hotel was a big plus. They served good drinks, beer and had a good atmosphere. DJ was playing both thursday and friday when I was there and on friday the place was packed.

Overall - Radisson Blu Grand Hotel in Sofia is at the rate I paid a good deal. The location is a huge plus, but if you've been to other five star Radisson Hotels I think you'll be a bit disappointed.

Room Tip: There's a lot of construction work going on at the backside of the hotel. Ask for a room in the...

The bar here used to be great for meeting people and watching football.
So then they decided to take it upmarket and get rid of the UK football.
Result? No customers.
So they spent thousands on a redesign.
Result no customers.
So they spend thousands more on an even worse design and try to charge 7 lev for a beer.
Result, a few meatheads for customers and no regulars.
The hotel has had scaffolding around it for at least 3 years.
A substandard place that is an insult to their brand.

- There is construction going on at the hotel. Rooms directly affected by the construction are still given to guests.
I opened the curtain to find 5-6 construction workers literally outside my window.
The rooms not facing / next to construction should be filled first, before the construction-facing rooms are given to guests.
In fact, rooms next to the construction should not even be given to guests at all - they should be deemed "out of order;"
- The system of the entire hotel was down (possibly due to the construction) for an entire day - they could not even issue us room keys, let alone have the wifi Internet working. This should not happen at a 5 star hotel. There should have been a generator;

- The bar downstairs is supposed to turn down the volume at midnight, but loud music continues until well past 2 am and it is IMPOSSIBLE to sleep without earplugs;

- Our non-smoking room smelled like stale cigarettes;

- Moths were flying around the hallways AND the dining room, where breakfast is served;

- Housekeeping is extremely stingy with towels - we were 2 people in the room; but they gave only 1 towel per room, no matter how many people are staying. I had to ask for extra towels every day, and was given the extra towels very reluctantly, with attitude. The housekeeping staff is NOT friendly at all;

- The pillows are feather/down but very cheap construction and quality - almost empty and not firm enough;

- There are no bathrobe or slippers in the rooms, which is a first for me in a 5 star hotel;

- Internet is very choppy - cannot get a stable connection;

- The staff overall is hit/miss:
The bellboy, who helped me with my luggage was very courteous and nice.
The doorman/security guy was not friendly at all.
The front desk staff was OK. The gentleman is nice, but there is one lady who is impatient and needs to learn to listen to guests and stop interrupting them impatiently and rudely
Overall, the staff needs to learn to be more courteous and friendly.

The only good thing about this hotel is its location. It is quite central, and within walking distance to all major sites.

- noisy dance party with continuous music and noises in the terrace of the first floor so far- now it's 1:25 am I literally cannot sleep. I don't know how can I focus on the things in the morotant meeting tomorrow. I'm not sure how much hotel got paid to rent the terrace but definately will lose lots of clients including me who frequently go business travel to here as well as other countries, It's terrifying to go to radisson.
- late pickup to the airport
