“A little dated”
Reviewed November 21, 2013 via mobile

This is a large museum with a very interesting geology section on the ground floor. The upper floors contain many stuffed animals in cases. I did not really enjoy seeing the birds and mammals. The snakes were interesting. I think it might be more fun for children.

“If you like history in a beautiful setting this is the museum for you.”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

This museum is certainly worth a visit for history buffs. The setting of the museum is very pleasant and gives space for those who may not be much into history something to do.

“Museum with cute exhibits”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

I really enjoyed this museum, because I saw so many interesting exhibits. Starting with the sooo many kinds of stones, birds and butterflies and finishing with really big animals as bears, bison and tigers.
I recommend this museum for people who really like nature and animals.

“A must see in Sofia”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

This is a must see museum. The artifacts and accompanying information are truly unique, and give you a small sense of the rich history of Bulgaria. One could easily spend a couple of hours enjoying the displays. too bad they do not allow pictures.

“Bizarre, Hilarious! GO HERE!”
Reviewed April 5, 2013

Most will say this doesn't deserve 'Excellent', but I can't help but love the place. It's endearing. We walked to the top floor and worked down. The top is insects and butterflies, worth a Very Good, considering the age of some of the collection - some pieces were at least 100 years old.

The comprehensive range of insects was bettered by their taxidermy collection. Before I say why, if you have never seen a two-headed baby turtle, then you need to go here. It is pickled and on show in one of the cabinets, easily missed. Bizarre! There is a fully grown tortoise and many other things.

Onto the good stuff. Ever seen those pictures of animals pulling faces? Ever thought it looks funny? If the answer is "no" to both then you might not enjoy this place as much as me.

Essentially 50% of the taxidermy animals are pulling strange faces. It's hilarious, it had us roaring with laughter. We weren't laughing at the museum, not insultingly, but it was simply so funny after all the cathedrals and Christian art to see something so good. There are excellent condition bears, lions, a panther, many species of mammals - they are typical and mostly static poses with some interest. The best part has to be the poses and expressions on the others though. Some of the animals must be seen to be believed.

More seriously, the insect collection was rivaled and overshadowed by the extensive range of birds on show. There were so many it was impossible to see everything. Someone posted "worth a quick look", but I think this place deserves some time. There are huge animals on show, and everything is well lit and easy to access.
