We went as group of 8 friends on the 'In the footsteps of Orpheus' walking tour in the Rhodope mountains. It was the first visit to Bulgaria for most of us and after this trip we are already looking forward to the next one! The arrangements all worked perfectly, transport was always where it was expected and the drivers were all very friendly. We realise that seatbelts are not compulsory in the back of vehicles in Bulgaria, but on the winding mountain roads would have felt much more comfortable if these had been working. The walks were all superb, through absolutely gorgeous scenery. The directions, backed up by Google Earth printouts, mainly worked well, but we got completely lost on our last day, which was quite worrying for a good hour or so. Accommodation ranged from good to superb. Our first night in Devin was fine, though the dinner was average at best. On the first night in Trigrad the dinner was not good, but the quality improved each night - the rooms were nice and the welcome as warm as could be wished. Our one night stay with Rumen was unforgettable - a mountain of delicious food, music, singing and dancing and an overwhelmingly warm welcome. The final night in Kosovo was luxurious, and just what we needed after our very tiring 5 days walking. All in all this was a memorable trip for all the right reasons, and one we plan to repeat.
