“Nice trip for a nice meal”
Reviewed March 1, 2013

The restaurant is ~30 km from Sofia with a nice mountain drive. When driving from Sofia to Borovets, once you reach the dam, slow down a little bid and start looking to your right.

The service is quite impressive. Bet on the daily menu, which is rather 'dynamic' throughout the day. Wine selection--with a personal touch. Talk to the waiter, don't read. And bear in mind that someone has to make a sacrifice and drive back to the city--don't risk driving after a drink, the cops are waiting. If you think it's private because it's remote, you are wrong--full of guests.

Price: EUR 20-30 per capita.

“My favorite restaurant”
Reviewed December 29, 2012

In the end of 2012 Chef's win Restaurant of the Year Award for second time in a row and that is not without reason. Chef's offers a best cuisine and best service in Bulgaria. Dishes even simplest ones have artistic touch and great quality. The prices are moderate in therms of quality delivered. So I think if there are Michelin stars in Bulgaria, Chef's certainly deserves one.

“The best cuisine in Sofia area”
Reviewed November 23, 2012 via mobile

It is the most professional restaurant in terms of cuisine and service. They have a short list of dishes. Everything we tried was excellent.

“New menu, friendly service”
Reviewed November 18, 2012

We visit the Chef's restaurant half a dozen times a year. Although it has always provided good service and reliably good grub the menu had become a little stale.
Today we found a new menu and it looked good. In our group of four, one chose the grilled goat's cheese salad, one the Asiatic salad with sweet chilli dressing and two took the beef carpaccio. All were tasty and went down well. The carpaccio was not "carpaccio" in the traditional sense; it was thinly-sliced rare beef, but it was a very generous helping and delicious.
Three of the party opted for pork knuckle with couscous - lamb shanks in western parlance - and I had the venison casserole. The lamb met with universal approval. The venison was served in a pan with side dishes of red cabbage, mashed potato and manatarki mushrooms (which I was pleased to be able to ignore - never liked the texture). The venison was great.
For desert the dieter ordered a coffee and the other three enjoyed the chocolate fondant. Chef's chocolate fondant today is not, to my mind, as good as the one served a year or more ago because it has a crunchier edge and includes adventitious almonds but, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it is is still up there in the pantheon of puddings.
The somellier was decent enough to direct us to a Bulgrian Mavrud; Vinica Zagreus 2010, at 49 leva a bottle. A more sensitive palate could probably distinguish it from the Amrone on the same rack for 120 leva but mine couldn't. Good honest guidance from the waiter, for which many thanks.
Given that the Chef's restaurant answers the phone in English and advertises it presence on the sign out front in English it is a surprise that the menu is only in Cyrillic. The waiters are all able - and happy - to translate but it is a shame that foreigners cannot enjoy salivating over a menu they can understand.
The service is top-notch; acceptably speedy, friendly and unobtrusive. As usual in Bulgaria no service charge is added to the bill.
Four of us had 5 G+Ts, three cokes, four salads/starters, four mains, three puds, two excellent bottles of wine, two coffees and two pousse-cafes (that's rakia to the cognoscenti). Total cost without service charge 365 leva; 47 euros a head. We left 400 leva and felt a bit mean.
With a Sunday lunch reservation for 14:00h our table was secure but more than a dozen would-be diners had to wait for a table. Hanging around by a log fire isn't perhaps too much of a chore but if you want to eat at a potentially busy time it is worth making the phone call to reserve a place.
