“Ok Hostel”
Reviewed August 7, 2013

We stayed at Lavele for two nights in an 8-bed dorm. Lockers were available but didn't open and close very well (they were located under the (bunk)beds which made it a bit of a hassle if somebody was sleeping in the bed above it). There are bathrooms on all four floors but the upper two are the best. The other two are very small; the showers are almost above the toilets, with wet toiletseating as a result. The staff was ok; a younger boy (about 16 years?) spoke English quite well and was very helpful, the others had a somewhat mistrusting attitude. They are only present between 9:00 and 21:00 (if we're not mistaking). Access to the hostel is provided through an electronic key. The breakfast is buffet-style and good, but easy to miss: it is served in the basement and only a small sign indicates it. This wasn't mentioned during check-in.

We stayed with a scouting group for 1 night. Very tidy rooms, Mario is really helpful and understanding. If there's 1 disadvantage of the hostel it is that there's only 1 toilet per floor, and the shower is right next to the toilet, which means the floor is always wet.

Over the course of two years, I spent many a night in Sofia staying at Hostel Lavele. It is affordable, always clean, and Mario is exactly the kind of person you want running such an establishment--friendly, supremely helpful, and always up for something fun. Without a doubt, the place you should stay for you time in Sofia.

My partner and I stayed recently at this hostel for 2 nights. The rate of the room, including breakfast was more than reasonable and the fact that we had the lesser fortune that our's was located on the 4th floor not really a problem and good exercice. (at least, not for young travellers or those young at heart with a big suitcase like as ourselves)
The hostel is centrally located and most of the sights are in the direct vicinity. Breakfast was good and the service very friendly indeed. The room we stayed in was very simple which translates in the the price but okay for us needing only a convenient place to stay for a short period. Special thanks to to the friendly lady/housekeeper and another one the young son of the owner who was so very kind to lend us his dad's umbrella. It's small things like these that make the difference.

My boyfriend and I travel rather often, and we must say that Lavele was one of the best hostels we've ever stayed at.

We arrived very late at night, but the manager Mario had kindly prepared the room and key for us and was extremely polite, even though we probably woke him up in the middle of the night.

The room was extraordinarily spacious and bright, we could just about play football in it. The whole place was immaculately clean, tidy, and most importantly, cosy. (we walked around in our socks and could sit on the floor, which is a great bonus when it comes to hostels and hotels). The room even had fresh towels. The breakfast in morning impressed us, too, it was probably worth more than the money we paid on the room :)

The whole place has this feeling of someone really taking care of it and putting effort into making it comfy. Breakfast was all home-made bread, yoghurt, jams and other tasty things - all presented in cute little jars. And nice-smelling coffee, of course.

Mario, the manager, was absolutely awesome - he helped us out (we needed to leave at an awkward time and didn't quite know what we were going to do) and kept out bags at Lavele, allowing us to pick them up at a rather ungodly hour.

On the whole, amazing value for money (haven't seen anywhere cheaper, actually), extremely comfy, quiet and pleasant to stay at, and the staff were simply stars.

Room Tip: Some rooms have cute balconies, just ask for one.

Lavele Hostel offers beds/rooms and also an apartment. We rented the apartment for Monday til Friday (arriving Monday AM, leaving Friday AM).

The apartment itself looked newly furnished, the seating in the main room was comfortable and the kitchenette more than adequate. We didn't use the cooking equipment - eating out is so cheap in Bulgaria there was little reason to!

The bathroom had excellent scolding hot water when needed, but you must run the shower for a few minutes. Be aware that some of the plumbing isn't quite like the rest of Europe - the building is very old - so water doesn't move quite as quickly through the drains. This isn't a great issue but it is worth noting.

The beds were comfortable but a little noisy; don't jump on them! Regardless of the creaks it was totally possible to get a good night's sleep.

The apartment we stayed in was the top floor. Although there is an old lift, a little uncertain of it, so we took the stairs. There is no reason why the lift wasn't safe but walking up the 5 flights is nothing for our young legs. If you go to Bulgaria you will need to do a lot of walking anyway - you may want to use the lift after all.

We booked late notice, and on the website there was an offer for transfer to and from the airport. Taking advantage of this was a very good move, and he was waiting for us at the arrivals gate. The driver was very nice, and on the journey into the city he pointed out some of the main attractions.

The Hostel proprietor, Mario, was courteous and well-spoken. Very polite he offered to look after our bags as we had arrived too early to check in. This meant we could explore for a couple hours until going to the apartment itself. He recommended a place to eat nearby and it was excellent quality.

Mario provided us with a City map, recommended the free Walking Tour, and was available for any other queries.

The breakfast was humble, but we missed it most days because of our lateness out of bed. There are additional excursions to nearby places (monasteries etc) but we did not have time to try these. We met with another guest of the hostel who seemed as happy as us (he stayed in a dorm) when we met him on the walking tour.

The entire building is secure and feels safe. Very close to a main road but once you understand the fearless nature of the locals then street crossing is easy. There is a metro station barely 2 minutes walk away, and underpasses mean that you needn't cross any big roads if you don't want to. 10 minutes walk is a supermarket and an abundance of shops and attractions. 15 minutes walk is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and the original St Sofia Basilica.

Overall this Hostel/Apartment provided more than we anticipated, and the price seemed too good to be true. I'll definitely stay there again, and recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Get the apartment if you want quiet, get the dorms if you want to make friends.

My husband and I stayed in the apartment which is in the adjacent building. We were met by the owner who was very friendly and helpful. The approach to the apartment is via a very dirty and old lift and staircase but, once inside we were pleasantly surprised by the clean, comfortable and spacious interior. The breakfast is simple (only one portion of cereal was available) but the homemade yoghurt and bread delicious. The apartment was adequately equipped with cooking facilities, fridge etc but no corkscrew and the toilet seat was not fixed. Lots of comfy seating, storage and bedding. Unfortunately I broke my leg falling on the uneven pavement immediately outside which was unlucky so please take care. The owner was very attentive calling an ambulance for us and offering further assistance. The signal strength for the wifi is very low in the appartment - we were unable to use this facility satisfactorily (other unsecured networks were available). The hostel is in a partially renovated building in a quiet street very close to the city centre, near the markets and within walking distance of the bus station. The apartment could easily accommodate 4 people. We would definitely stay here again if in Sophia.
