I have visited this place twice: 5 years ago for lunch, didn't like the food, found it tasteless, pseudo Italian and too expensive, so I was avoiding it. But last month I was invited there for a family dinner. The garden is really nice. Desserts were delicious.
Food was average again, did not leave me with the impression there was actually a chef doing the cooking or someone supervising the kitchen. As is still the practice in many restaurants in this country, no one makes any effort to keep up a standard. That's ok if the place is average and cheap but not if it is on the expensive side (for Bulgaria) as Mediterraneo. A main reason is that owners do not invest in the personnel or in the quality of the products.
For example, a friend ordered crispy fried fish (perhaps sardines) and got a big plate with surprisingly few fishes - more like an appetiser than a main course, ONE withered slice of bell pepper, and some oil-based sauce with herbs. A bit later, the neighbouring table got the same dish but twice the amount of fish and veggies and some white sauce (they hadn't order a double portion). Since the fish was relatively delicious (tastier than what my other companions had for dinner - "Italian" sausages and some meat dishes, all too dry and tasteless), I decided to risk it out and order the crispy fish as my main course. I got more fishes than our first order but less than the neighbouring table, and no sauce at all. When I asked for the sauce (it was on the menu), I got some oil. This might sound as a petty complaint but speaks well enough for the lack of standard I am talking about.
Service was terribly slow and inadequate, the place was very busy (because of the garden) and obviously the kitchen could not keep up. I personally will keep avoiding this restaurant.
Hamachi, Toro and one Sicilian restaurant are owned by the same person. He is trying to offer a more "high-class", "authentic" tastes in Sofia but the result is pseudo Japanese, Spanish and Italian food, fairly expensive, using poor quality products.
One more example: we wanted to order the squid stuffed with some Italian cheese but gave it up since the waiter told us it was actually Philadelphia cream cheese?!
