Hotel Holiday Sarajevo
Ranked #49 of 70 Hotels in Sarajevo

As part of a motorcoach tour group, my husband and I stayed in the Holiday Inn Hotel in Sarajevo. I had read the reviews but thought it couldn't be as bad as the reviews said. Well, it was, if not worse. The first glimpse of the hotel was that of overgrown flower beds full of weeds and trash. Next, there was the fountain which was also full of trash. The hotel is across from the national museum which is closed due to lack of funding and appears to be in an older part of the city.

The interior of the hotel is tired and old and not so very clean. There were old chairs left over from the Winter Olympics in '84 which I don't believe had been reuphostered since then. Overhead in the atrium area was a sculpture of either wood or resin which had about 2 inches of dust on it. The tv in our room had a remote which had seen it's prime and which only worked part of the time. The hair dryer was a joke. It was one of the type used more in Europe than the US. It was a box on the wall with a long coiled wire (covered by plastic) which went to a wand on the end. The problem was that the wire coil which was supposed to have plastic to carry the hot air to the end had no plastic so it was useless. Someone in our group asked for tissues and the front desk said they had none. There was a man's valet in the room to hold clothing but it was broken and only served to take up room. Supposedly, the reason for using this hotel was that it was located close to sightseeing spots but the armed guard in the lobby nipped that in the bud. Perhaps he was guarding the broken ATM but I felt a little uneasy. There had evidently been a leak in the plumbing in the round bar and they had stuffed dirty towels around the counter to contain the water. Looked like they had been there quite a while.

The breakfast provided by the hotel was fine as was the dinner that night but most of the 30 some folks on our tour were glad to get out of there. Would I recommend it to my clients (I'm a travel agent,) absolutely not.

We have just returned from a two week vacation in the Adriatic countries. Of all of the hotels that we stayed in - this was the most disappointing. Our tour guide tried to put a positive spin by saying that this was one of the featured hotels during the 1984 Olympics in this host city. The hotel needs a major redo from top to bottom. Our Check IN went smoothly, but everything else was less than satisfactory. After going up on the elevator to the floor for our room, both of us commented on how dark and dingy the corridor was. They had turned off every other light fixture! The wood trim everywhere was very dark and without illumination- it made it worse. We opened our door and tried to close it - it was difficult to get it to stay shut. We scanned the room and found two adequate but hard double beds freshly made. The room smelled of stale cigarette smoke. Drapes at the window had holes in them. Looking to clear the air, we tried to open our window - the jam was broken. Our phone didn't work. The shades on the lamps in the room were burnt (as if they had been overturned and the bulb rested on the shade). We then checked out the bathroom and noticed that there was no tissue. We had seen the room attendant in the hall near our room and asked for some tissue. We were told that they had none. The water glasses in the room were dirty and chipped. I took them down to the front desk and was told that one of them wasn't a water glass but a vase!. They did replace them. The hairdryer was unusable because there was no hose to connect the dryer to the nozzle - the air went nowhere. WiFi, which was featured, didn't work.

The atrium had a bar/lounge and large sitting area- completely deserted- was atypical of any 5 star hotel that we have ever stayed in. Food was tolerable.

Room Tip: Don't accept a booking here.

I am so sorry to write this review. This city has suffered so much from the war and it's aftermath. But this hotel is in a time warp. It is very old feeling and there seemed to be very few people staying here. It was way too quiet for a big hotel and the halls are dimly lit. We stayed as part of a tour group and our guide said that other hotels were either too small or too far away to accomodate our group. We had a group dinner that was prepared for us and it was good. Breakfast the next morning, not so much. Few choices and not in step with other hotels we have encountered on our trip. The room was clean as was the bathroom. Bed comfort was OK. The desk chair had a broken leg, no Kleenex in the holder, no hose on the old fashioned hair dryer, and the a/c was turned off. Old 20" tube tv had CNN in English. We left our window open and were OK. There was no safe in the room. The staff were nice but seemed subdued. I would be, too, if I worked there.
We loved the city and it has struggled to come back after a horrific war, but I cannot recommend this hotel in it's present condition.

The room hasn't been updated in 3 decades. It reeks of cigarette smell. Zero valet outside so you have to get taxis yourself (if they ever come). Everything is stale and mouldy. Wifi doesn't work properly in most rooms. But the worst is the service - during check-in, they act as if we're in a fish market rather than at a hotel. Then they let people cut in line, and when I complained, they talked in Bosnian complaining in impolite words about my complaint to others (too bad the receptionist didn't know that was an acquaintance of mine!). I will never set foot there again.

Built for 1984 Winter Olympics this hotel has a place in Olympic history. It also featured in less happy times during the war of 1993. It's clean, comfortable and the staff are helpful and friendly. The food is good, and the location was great for me, as my business was in Ministry of Civil Affairs, which is across the road. It does need to be updated, although the finances needed will be large, and the pay back on investment would be over a long period. And in the meantime other hotels have moved ahead. The public spaces are large and usually not used( people go elsewhere for drinks and meetings) This gives the hotel a somewhat gloomy feel. But don't be put off- its great value for money.

June 2013 we checked in and left the same night. This hotel is "famous" for being across from the parliament in Sarajevo and "accidentally" being hit by missile fire during the war in the 1990's. International media was staying there. Well, I don't think they've done much, if anything, to fix it since it was bombed. It was just awful. No AC, parking in a dump of a lot a block away, and the room was comparable to a cell. The beds were old, sagging, little light or lamps, and the bathroom was dirty and nothing really worked. We checked out immediately - at least they knew it was bad and gave us our money back. Sarajevo is a beautiful, rebounding city with some unique tourist attractions and nice hotels. Stay away from this hote.
