“Wonderful, and a relief”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2013

Holy books, ritual knives, scholarship, old musical instruments, intensely moving photographs, all in a beautiful old synagogue - this museum commemorates the historical Jewish community in Bosnia, and its terrible end. But as much as a commemoration, the museum is a celebration - of the beauty and richness of Bosnian Jewish culture, and the enormous amount the Jewish community once contributed to Bosnian life (especially in the field of medicine).

After the negativity, greyness and focus on recent history of the tunnel museum and the Sarajevo museum, a visit to the Jewish Museum puts things in perspective. I found it a relief.

“Fascinating museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2013

This little three floor museum is in a Sephardic synatgogue. It is fascinating. The Jews expelled from Spain came in the 15th century to find refuge here and prior to WWII there were 9,000 Jews of which 7,000 were killed by the invading Nazi Croatians and Germans. They have some of the ancient artifacts and many of the photos of the various group activities of the kids and adults of this active community and some of the cultural artifacts such as the Golden Book. They continued to speak Spanish. One of the museum staff was present to answer questions - speaking fluent English. He said there are now 700 in the Jewish community of Sarajevo of which about half are Jewish and others are from other religions in mixed marriages (interfaith marriages have been common in Bosnia). Not expecting much, I found this to be the most interesting among several very interesting museums in Sarajevo.

“Impressive Museum with many artifacts”

Liked the information available and the wooden design.
Now I know how a circumcision knife looked like a long time ago.

“Wonderful little museum”

It was wonderful to see how Sephardic Jewish people lived many years ago. My grandparents were married at this former synagogue, and I was so grateful to find it still standing.

“Has a copy of the Haggadah”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012

This was a small museum in the Bascarsija. Most of the things in the museum were the same as what you've seen in other Jewish Museums throughout Europe, though this one does have a copy of the Haggadah that is in the National Museum, if you don't have the chance to make it out there and want to see it.
