A small but compact history of Judaism in Sarajevo. The curator I met spoke excellent English and gave an eloquent description of Jewish live in Sarajevo not only during the siege, but during the |Nazi occupation as well.

The Jeewish Museum in Sarajevo is located in the old synagogue. Its room were used both during and after the last war to store and protect items salvaged from the Sarajevo Museum, while it was being bombarded and while it was being restored. The synagogue is a beautiful, old brick and stone building located in Sarajevo's Old Town, which ws mercifully intact after the war ended at the end of 1995. Exhibited are old Jewish clothing from the Ottoman era, a mock-up of a famous apothecary shop with period items, old documents, an exact replica of the Sarajevo Haggadah, and several period photographs. Displayed in the lovely old building, which is worth a visit in itself, the museum gives a glimpse of life in Sarajevo free of sectarian strife. Fir a while the visitor is transported back in time, not through magical techno tricks but quiet thought and dignity.
