“Good hostel, but has some drawbacks”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

I stayed for two nights with a friend in a 8 bed mixed dorm. The location was great, just in the city center. Beds were cosy, and general condition of the hostel were good. Small remark is that we got only linen without blanked to cover. Although it was summer, sometimes you just need extra warmth. The major problem was that it had only one bathroom for about 20 people on the floor. So we found ourselves queuing for more than half an hour, although all rooms were not fully occupied. Other thing is that staff was not really friendly, and we had a feeling that we are unwelcome.

3 years ago, when i was travelling in Balkans, with a friend, we decide to make a stop over in Sarajevo to see this city and a friend of mine. Some hours, before arriving in Sarajevo, our host, in Couchsurfing, told us, that she will not host us, so we need to look for a place to sleep in Sarajevo.
The tourist information in Sarajevo (probably working with some hostel in Sarajevo), told us, that everything is overbooked in Sarajevo, and it is impossible to find a bed to sleep.

Walking in Marsala Tita street, we found this hostel, and decide to ask.
The receptionist open the door, and told us that he has 2 free beds for us. We were so happy (and tired), so we took the beds. We had 2 beds in 6 bed dorm, we did not know if it was hot (we were seeping for 3 nights in a tent, so everything for us was a 5* hotel).
We stayed only one night, but everything was OK. The reception (they offer us, to keep an eye in our baggage as we were walking in the city all day), the bathroom was clean and everything we wanted to ask, we got quickly and good response from the staff (about dinner, maps, sightseeing and tickets for Zagreb).

Room Tip: An decadence hostel in Sarajevo

Saw on hostel bookers earlier in the day there were rooms free. Got there guy said no rooms without reservation, explained hostel world showed free rooms, he gave lazy excuse without even checking himself.

Later Booked another hostel instead and still saw that there were rooms free in tito. Lazy receptionist turning away business

Just to confirm, hostel Tito46 is also known as city magic, which is the name we booked it under on hostelworld/bookers. However, as we knew the address it was really easy to find and had a large sign out front. The hostel itself was welcoming enough, and we were given a small talk about the history of Sarajevo when we arrived, which was a good touch. The main common area has an outside sitting patio and inside there is a kitchen with everything you need and even an Xbox with fifa13! Which was a surprise, and also a nice way to meet people.
The room we stayed in wasn't all that great though. It was tiny and next to the common area, whereas every other room was upstairs. There was also no lock on the door and it did get noisy at night with people coming in and out through the front door to the hostel. The beds however were absolutly fine.
The location of this hostel is clearly its best feature, a few minutes from the beautiful old town, but still on a main road so it is easy to find, and we had no problem with street noise.
This is a hostel that I would re commend and easily consider staying here again if I was on a budget.

I am not one to moan and I know it's only a hostel but basic security should still be paramount.

Once checked in you are presented with an electronic key card which gains you access to the building. The door is not self closing and most of the time we found it to be open as you really had to slam it to close it.

We were not given a key to our individual room which we found a little strange but we just got our heads down after a long trip and went out the next morning to explore.

When we returned 2 other people in our room had had their belonging stolen and our bags had been rifled through and the contents of our bags strewn across the room. We informed the reception of what had happened and were told it was impossible to keep and eye on everyone entering and leaving the hostel.

The lockers are not big enough to store your rucksacks in like other hostels and the lockers themselves can be opened with keys from other lockers.

The location of the hostel is good, right on the Main Street and a short walk from all major attractions. The shared area is big with a large TV but the kitchen only has 1 working hob and limited fridge space for so many people.

It is good value but other hostels of a similar price are available and will no doubt be safer.

It is a hostel with much potential but some air con and improved safety wouldn't go amiss!

I've been to this hostel twice this year and I found it quite acceptable. The price is okay, location is excellent, the staff is very kind and helpful. There is a kitchen for the hostel guests but people shouldn't worry about cooking when they are in Sarajevo. You can find some great restaurants nearby the hostel and food is very tasty and cheap. Rooms are very simple, with 4 or more beds in them. They won't give you too much space but they are clean and safe. Don't worry about the noise. Yes, the hostel is in the very centre of the city but you are safe here because your window isn't looking at the Main Street. And again, I must say that the price for accomodation is definitely acceptable.

Now, there are a couple of things that can be improved. There are only two bathrooms in the hostel where sometimes 30 or 40 people sleep so you have to be pretty patient if there are people waiting in a queue to brush their teeth or have a shower. During the night, between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. there is water restriction, i.e. there is no water in the hostel.

So, if you are looking for a place to be close to the main tourist attractions, where you can cook your own food but need not to, where you can have shower and rest from all day walking and you don't have to pay a lot of money for all that, then this might be the place for you.

Where do I start?
* the toilet cistern was broken and had to be flushed with a lanyard, if you were lucky and it actually had water in it.
* the dorm room lights were operated from outside the room, resulting in neighboring rooms accidentally turning the lights on in the middle of the night while sleeping.
* paid 5 euro for washing, only to have a $100 NZD shirt go missing, and it was also way later than they promised. Staff proceeded to look through customers bags in my room who also had washing, which I thought was incredibly inappropriate for security reasons, and an invasion of privacy.

The location is great, pricing is about average for the area, unfortunately I had a pretty terrible experience. If they got everything working properly, and sorted out their proceedures so that clothing you've *paid* them to wash.
