“Perfectly sited to explore the Old and New Sarajevo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2014

Stayed here for 2 nights as part of an Insight Tour. Room allocated was likely to be a Deluxe Apartment with a separate sitting area and kitchen cabinet with a separate sink, although there were no utensils. Room furnishing was functional not luxurious. The bathroom however was luxurious with excellent fittings like a spa jet bathtub, a separate shower stall, toilet and bidet. Amenities included free wifi, bathrobes, slippers and trousers press but no coffee/tea making facilities. From the window, we get a view of the café terrace and the Gazihusrev-bey mosque and the walls of the old market place (Dugi Bezistan). Breakfast was limited, adequate but not great. The hotel is sited in the heart of the city, a short walk into the old city, Bascarsija, with its likely shops, cafes and restaurants and the main shopping street of Ferhadija. Good location, room with a view yet very quiet makes for a comfortable and most pleasant stay.

Other hotels are mentioned as being in the top end in Sarajevo, but I believe this must be the best, except for some minor drawbacks. It is located right in the old center, but is (or at least feels) completely new. The rooms are very modern and luxourious, but the halls are a bit drak and labyrintine. The wi-fi ha a tendency to Loose connection, so watching streaming was best near the door, but that might have been just in my room. The staff at the restaurant looked a bit tired, but the food was fine.

On first impression, this hotel appears to be sleek, modern, and full of the latest techie ideas. However, at a practical level, there are many dysfunctions. In our group of four, two managed to get the shower going after great difficulty with the instructions, and two never did. In one room, one had to climb into the tub in order to open the shower door and furniture had been placed so that getting to the bed was an acrobatic act. Clothing hooks were placed so high that three of the four people in the two rooms could not reach them. Lighting in the bathroom was poorly placed such that it was difficult to do make- up.
When we checked in, there was water all over the bathroom floor. Despite it being reported, no- one ever showed up to deal with it.
The layout of the hotel itself is not efficient? One elevator can only be reached by going through a function room, and is inaccessible when an event is in progress. The night we were there the event was a high school prom and the loud music reverberated through our rooms until midnight.
On the positive side, staff were reasonably helpful, and wi fi connections were good and included in room price. Beds are low-slung but reasonably comfortable. Room size is adequate.

Unfortunately, the Hotel Europe seems to get "by" on its reputation and that is a mystery to me. Too many deficiencies to list here though. My advice to the management of Hotel Europe Sarajevo: Go to the United States and visit a 5 Star Hotel for a week. Then you'll understand what true quality is. This hotel is a two star if not for its location in Bascarsija.

I stayed at this place for a week and was perpetually frustrated - with noise, with service, with amenities and with overall atmosphere.

Service: they aren't very customer oriented here. The staff is not friendly (though not overly rude either - just indifferent). No help offered and god forbid you check out when a tour is checking in/out. They are very poorly organized.

Noise: had a room on the Main Street so head the loud club next door until 2am every night. Air conditioner does not work well, so it becomes a Faustian choice between not sleeping because of noise or because of temperature...

Amenities: pool is very nice, though difficult to locate (only one elevator goes there - despite signs to the contrary). sauna is extra - about 15 euros for 1/2 hour. Only Finnish sauna worked, none of the others were open/functioning.

Overall atmosphere is a bit run down. Spacious room, but poorly laid out and bed was a bit uncomfortable. Overall, this place is operating on its location alone. Restaurant is expensive and very bland. Too many other places around to waste time and money here.

Room Tip: Ask for a room looking at old town. Do not stay on side facing street/river.

Clean, quiet and nice sized room, Easy walking distance to everything in town.
Made a great location to explore the surrounding mountain towns and the historical areas.
Strongly recommend as a base camp.
