Nice garden-like place. Good ustipci and meza and pretty good begova corba. Otherwise nothing special on the menu.

I agree with the bald finnish guy that this is a restaurant hard to describe. Fantastic interior, similar to Dveri in Old Town Sarajevo but this feels more genuine, if the word genuine could be applied for this kind of design. The food is very good, but not the best in Sarajevo. However this is the place to go on a saturday afternoon, bring a book have a Bosna kafa and a rakia by yourself or enjoy the local food with some friends.

Many of those involved in Mine Action (land mine clearance) in Bosnia would regularly meet up in the Avlija at a table next to the bar, always reserved in advance with a 'Danger Mines' sign ; ) British, American and other International EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) and Demining Technicians/Advisors would meet up with the Bosnian lads we worked with, who were mainly former KDZ (Bosnian Bomb Disposal), I think this in itself shows you how cherished the atmopshere of the Avlija is.

Order a bowl of Grah (thick bean soup) and fill it up from the soup pot yourself, their chicken wings and breaded mushrooms are excellent and the local Sarajevo Beer brewed in the brewery in the City that provided natural spring water to thousands of besieged Sarajevans during the War, comes in Large 1/2 Litre Glasses (ask for a Sarajevsko Toceno Pivo).

You can't say you have really been to Sarajevo if you haven't visited Avlija at least once. The atmosphere is very relaxed and has that 'feel good' factor, my Wife who is local meets friends from the Hospital she works in close by quite often here....

Enjoy! you certainly won't regret it...

This is a place you go for the atmosphere. The place is stocked with odd stuff and it doesn't represent any particular style. It's very popular among the locals and if you want to make sure you'll get a place you should reserve in advance, especially if you're more than two persons. The place serves good food, everyhting from pastas to beefs, sallads or just snacks. It's also a good place just to have a few drinks or a pint of dark Sarajevsko, which isn't found in every place in town. In summer time they pull back the roof and you're like eating in a garden. The crew serving in the place are really relaxed and do speak English. For some reason my kids think this is a cool place and we can't visit Sarajevo without coming here.

To Avlija I got introduced by my old Sarajevo friend, and we really had a good time there.
You most likely have to try beans there. Great taste.
