Please, when will this crumbling edifice be taken down and replaced by something lovely to look at? All it is good for is for teenagers to climb up and slide down on their backsides.

..until graffiti vandals wrecked it. Windows, smashed and marble tiles removed. What a shame. Please restore it!

It was built for Enver Hoxha and, as an evident reference to the socialist period, it is often regarded as something to be destroyed.
Many times its demolition has been suggested to build something new, or just to eliminate such an apparent souvenir of the past.
From an architectural point of view I consider it very interesting and worthy to be preserved.
It cannot be visited.
Till know it is save because a private broadcast company had it concession.

Set just off the trendy, modern, and very European Blloku area of Tirana, nothing gives you a stark reminder of Albania's brutal history under Hoxha than the derelict pyramid, originally constructed as his mausoleum.

Post-communism, the pyramid bounced back and forth between temporary museum exhibits and a convention site; is now in complete disuse, and is on the verge of being razed by local authorities.

So what does it have to offer for today's tourist? Plenty, as a matter of fact.

For a fantastic, free view over bustling Tirana and the surrounding mountains, simply walk your way to the top.

It sounds insane, but half of what you see in Tirana, and Albania in general is on the borderline of crazy, so, as the saying goes, when in Rome...!

First, climbing this monstrosity is risky. Do so at your own peril. I won't sugarcoat things. It doesn't look steep, but it is. I almost slipped half-way up on my first try. You may see local kids run up the side (pros!) but this is no walk in the park, so to speak. However, you'll note that there are two "ramps" on the sides of the entrance that are slightly less steep; climb up one of these to keep things on the safer side.

Only in Albania can you climb a derelict socialist behemoth meant to be a mausoleum to a former Communist strongman. It makes for an interesting story, and will give you some great pictures to be sure. I highly recommend doing so before this thing is inevitably torn down. The views are priceless. One can see all of Blloku, toward Skanderbeg, Dajti and beyond on a clear day.
